The explosive 2000 Barbaresco Vanotu moves things to another level. A blackish garnet with potent aromas of asphalt, caramel, roses, and warming alcohol, solid and muscular in flavor, packed and chewy, its dense texture and firm tannins indicate that this Barbaresco, approachable in a year or two, will still be drinking well in 2018. Bright, dark red. Musky aromas of currant, smoke, cedar, roast coffee and nuts; quite obviously oaky. Sweet, oaky and somewhat high-toned; like the normale, this gives an impression of less phenolic ripeness than the '99. Tannins are slightly green and dry.
