The 2015 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is heavily reduced at the moment despite rigorous coaxing, though there seems to be plenty of substance underneath. The palate is rounded and honeyed on the entry, rich and viscous in texture, with dried honey, fennel and a touch of ginger toward the finish. Not bad, just a tad overworked at first, but it gains harmony and precision. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which is matured entirely in new oak (both barrels!), has a very complex, quite intense bouquet with touches of white peach and apricot blossom developing in the glass. The wood is neatly folded into the fruit here. The palate is very well balanced with tropical hints on the entry - pineapple, peach and nectarine - though this is counterbalanced by the acidity. It feels weighty yet harmonious in the mouth, even if it does not quite possess the razor-sharp delineation of the 2014 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet. Nevertheless, this is a gorgeous white Burgundy that will be difficult to resist in its youth.
