Despite my high expectations, the 2010 Barolo Ravera is weighed down by some oxidation. The wine seems to be aging prematurely and I suspect there may have been an issue with the sample tasted at the winery (although Falvio Roddolo didn't seem to think so). I'm putting a question mark next to my score because I'm not sure how long the bottle had been opened before my visit. The bouquet offers dark fruit with dry aromas of tobacco leaf, Darjeeling tea and cured meat. Fruit for this wine comes from a half-hectare plot and only 3,000 bottles are made. A second parcel has recently been purchased and in about ten years time—when the new vines reach their production years—bottle numbers are expected to reach 8,000. Past editions of this wine have been excellent and the 2010 should not be showing this level of oxidation.
