Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2012-2022, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2014

The most powerful of these 1999s, the Barolo Rüncot is also the least aromatically developed. The Rüncot was raised entirely in oak, and the new barrels are quite evident. There is plenty to admire in the wine's textural richness and voluptuous personality. At the same time, recent vintages are much more complete and exciting.

Dark ruby. The 1999 Runcot is another terrific effort from this producer. It is a superbly well-balanced Barolo, with a penetrating nose of toasted oak and layers of sweet dark fruit that open in the glass, revealing wine of exceptional refinement and elegance with the structure to age gracefully for at least another decade. Today my impression is that it is showing just the barest hint of its ultimate potential and my guess is that it will mature later than the 2001, but time will ultimately tell.

The 1999 Barolo Runcot is spicy and rich in aroma, but fresh and mineral as well, large-framed and with an important extraction, very sizeable and concentrated on the finish. Drink: 2005-2018. (this was bottled in August but will be held back an extra year prior to being released) Dark red-ruby. Sweetly oaky aromas of strawberry, cherry, mocha and mint. Broad and ripe but quite dry. Not yet especially expressive in the middle but the finish mounts slowly and impressively, and the tannins seem finer and more successfully integrated than those of the 2000 Runcot. I suspect this will turn out very well.
