Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2020-2040, Neal Martin, Nov 2018

The 2015 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a bewitching bouquet that is just " très Volnay": sensual, generous, packed full of pure red fruit and showing clever, discreet use of new oak. The palate is very well balanced, with gentle grip in the mouth, and voluminous in keeping with the style of the vintage, offering layers of red and black fruit, tobacco, brown spices and a touch of undergrowth that becomes increasingly pronounced as it opens in the glass. This is a bullish, quite masculine Volnay on the finish, but I believe that will soften with time. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, Bouley's 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is superb, offering up a beautiful bouquet of cherries, raspberries, dried flowers and cocoa nib, subtly framed by a discreet touch of oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and complete, with a deep, multidimensional core, fine but chalky tannins and juicy balancing acids. This is a terrific wine from a domaine that continues to fly somewhat under the radar.

(one of the three barrels was new): Good medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry, blueberry and spices, plus hints of coffee and mocha. Fat, thick and sweet; the sunny growing season dominates the terroir here, but the flavors of acidulated fruits do not lack for energy. This dense, fine-grained wine finishes with building, ripe, broad tannins that will need time to resolve.

Heady. Almost pungent. Sweet and light and fragrant. Only just enough acidity but offers lots of joy. Long and transparent. (JR)
