Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2024-2042, Jancis Robinson MW, Apr 2017

Tasted not long before bottling. Pale rim and mid crimson. Very lightly herbal nose. Sweet start and more open than some. Masses of charming sweetness with a little red-cherry aspect. Super-open with a hint of slightly drying oak on the finish that Guillaume d’Angerville assures us is ‘not typical’. Easy and approachable for an Angerville wine. (JR)

(from very old vines: one parcel was planted in the 1950s and the estate purchased another 0.5 hectare of similar age in 2007): Medium ruby. Inviting violet lift to the aromas of blackberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. Wonderfully dense and sweet, conveying superb inner-mouth lift to its flavors of dark berries and bitter chocolate. Finishes with substantial late-arriving tannins and lovely lingering sweetness of fruit. Nothing hard about this beauty.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles, from the lieu-dit situated at the bottom of the incline, was showing a little reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is well balanced with thickset tannin lending weight and backbone to this Volnay, although it feels tightly-coiled and showed a little heaviness on the finish. I suspect this might be surpassed by the domaine's other premier crus this vintage.
