Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2018-2022, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 1979 Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru has a clear, pale golden hue. The nose is very clean with immediate buttery notes complemented by orange peel, Golden Syrup and tangerine, although if truth be told, the vintage appears to put a rein on any aspirations towards profundity. The palate is powerful and swarthy, citrus fruit on the entry, well balanced, very vibrant with grapefruit, orange zest, a touch of dried pineapple and quince. It does not exude minerality or sense of place. Although it has held up beautifully over thirty years, it has not evolved into a spectacular or particularly memorable wine. Poured at the Louis Jadot dinner at the Couvent des Jacobins.

This first wine has rich, honeyed, toasty aromas, with hints of hazelnut and lemon. It has a lovely balance between maturity and freshness, and terrific length. (And the second bottle is even better.) (CM)
