The 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is heavily laced with oak tones that loom large over the finished wine. Toasted vanilla, coconut and cinnamon give the bouquet a one-dimensional character. The mouthfeel is velvety, rich and shows deep layering.

Representing the newest level added to the Chianti Classico quality- pyramid, the 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows a deep dark color and elaborate aromas of ripe fruit, spice, mocha and tobacco. It’s a shapely, sophisticated Tuscan red with sweet baking spice on the close. The tannins are smooth, velvety and framed by an elegant mineral sensation. Congratulations to Francesco and Filippo Mazzei Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. The exciting news from Castello di Fonterutoli is the addition of a new wine, the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, located above “Riserva” under the revised guidelines of the Chianti Classico denomination. Many estates will bottle a Gran Selezione, but this is the first one I have officially scored. Importer: Palm Bay International; www.palmbay.com
The 2010 Chianti Classico shows lovely depth and power in its expressive dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice. Clean veins of minerality give the wine its considerable focus and energy. This is an especially understated wine from Fonterutoli, but it works. A clean, vibrant finish of stone fruits, flowers and spices resonates on the close.
