Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2017

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Sauzet's 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru les Combettes has a crisp, lively, cold stone/limestone and grilled walnut-scented bouquet that lends it a Meursault-like personality. There is certainly impressive vigor in situ. The palate is very saline on the entry with fine acidity and very good depth—a quintessential Puligny-Montrachet that is lightly spiced and comes armed with an unsubtle but powerful finish that lingers.

Bright, pale yellow. Pure, vibrant scents of white peach, hazelnut and menthol complicated by sexy leesy nuances. Rich and sappy in the mouth, conveying compelling sweetness of fruit for a firmly dry wine. Orchard fruit and mineral flavors spread out to saturate the palate without leaving any impression of weight. A layer of dusty minerality leaves the mouth vibrating on the very long, subtle aftertaste. Over the past 25+ years (I can still taste the 1986!), this wine has been one of my go-to Burgundy premier crus, along with such other consistently outstanding—and equally pricey—gems as Jean-Marc Pillot’s Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers Clos Saint-Marc, Ramonet’s Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes, Lafon’s Meursault Charmes, Coche-Dury’s Meursault Perrières and Henri Boillot’s Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchère.

Good pale yellow. Deeper and nuttier than the Champ-Canet, offering scents of mirabelle , candied yellow fruits and menthol. Rich and moderately thick but with racy acidity giving lift and definition to the middle palate. Shows excellent leesy intensity and attractive violet lift. This is also a bit tannic and tight but comes across as more perfumed and lively than the Champ-Canet. With excellent punch, this wine is evolving slowly. Incidentally, this vineyard features a massale selection that Boudot uses for replanting missing vines in his other crus.
