The 2008 Barolo Vigneto Garretti is a pretty, deceptively medium-bodied wine. All of the La Spinetta signatures are present, but with softer tannins that make the Garretti more accessible and pleasurable young than the estate's top wines. Plums, black cherries, grilled herbs, mint and sage come alive in the glass. This is yet another gorgeous, striking wine from proprietor Giorgio Rivetti and his team.

(from vines planted in 1946): Medium red. Pure aromas of medicinal cherry, menthol and flowers. A sweet, lively midweight with integrated acidity framing the dark cherry, mint and menthol flavors. Not a fleshy Barolo, and distinctly withdrawn today. Very good finishing grip and vivacity suggest that this wine will reward four or five years of cellaring. The Garretti is made from the early-ripening high part of Giorgio Rivetti's Campe vineyard in Grinzano Cavour. These vines had been picked during the two days just before my recent visit to the estate on September 12, extremely early for Barolo in this vintage.
