Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Saint Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly from Château de Puligny-Montrachet has a more sophisticated nose than its peers, with fine mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with good ripeness, well-integrated oak and a satisfying, Meursault-like, nutty finish that lingers in the mouth. This is very fine, well crafted Saint Aubin that should age nicely over the next decade.

Pale straw. Citrus peel, powdered stone, flowers and a suggestion of curry powder on the nose. Pretty flavors of ripe pear and lime show refreshing cut and length. Firmer and more energetic than the village Chassagne. Incidentally, Etienne de Montille is now using 54-millimeter-wide DIAM 10 corks to seal these wines, which should offer more protection againstoxidation--and consistency from bottle to bottle--than most traditional corks.
'Just behind Montrachet.' 15% new in 350- and 600-litre barrels. They prefer high acid to high sugar. Exciting and rich. Lots of tension and potential here. Lime fruit. (JR)
