I love the exuberance and generosity of the 2011 Barolo Monfalletto. The bouquet is austere and powerful with thick aromas of blackberry, cassis, spice, tar and licorice that peel back in elegant fashion. The wine wraps thickly over the palate with firm tannins and rich consistency. It will gain in elegance and finesse as it continues its bottle evolution.

La Morra. Wide bricky rim. Extremely spicy red fruit and a fine floral note too. A hint of dried cherry, almost prune, but the fruit isn’t tired. Really compact tannins. Fine, powdery texture but it acts as quite a block to the fruit expression just now. Lovely fresh length alongside the powdery texture. (JH)
La Morra. Deep ruby with orange glow. Fresh pine, cherry and raspberry on the nose. Bright and concentrated cherry on the palate with a wonderful, long, tannic, fragrant fruit finish. Shows real breed and power. (WS)
Mid ruby. Intense, sweet palate entry. Rich and just a little stodgy. Too much oak? Not the freshest on the finish. A bit ungracious. (JR)
