The boldest of the bunch is the 2011 Barolo Sarmassa. This wine has more oomph, power and structure. It promises a longer drinking window, too, with fruity concentration and thicker lines. Despite that upfront power and density, the wine actually reveals thin and streamlined lines in the mouth that add to its overall sense of power and momentum. This wine seems to perform the best in the warm vintages.

Tasted blind. Barolo. Maturing mid ruby with orange rim. Brooding nose and rich fruit on the palate with big, big tannins. A little rustic and heavy, with just enough acidity to keep it going. (WS)
Barolo. Bright ruby. Transparent nose is like molten boiled red sweets. Concentrated dry tannins on the end. Not nearly ready. Ambitious and a bit brutal at this stage. (JR)
Barolo. Mid ruby with broad orange rim. Balsamic with notes of cherry and raspberry jam and quite brash, tactile tannins. Pretty powerful, tangy fruit on the finish that is super charged with tannins, but it sure is animating. Now it needs time to settle. (WS)
