The name comes from the violets that spring first here. There is more weight of fruit on the nose, though this is again very clean and fresh. Pure. Punchy and fruit-driven in the mouth and again that fresh, energetic bounce. Very good.

Barolo. Bright pale blackish crimson. Pure, unusually floral (for 2011) aromas and then round, fruity, confident palate before some finely crafted tannins. Very pretty rather than massive. Great balance and persistence. (JR)

Barolo. Deep ruby with bright orange tinges. Ripe, sweet strawberry fruit with real depth. Youthful sweetness on the palate. Muscular grainy tannins and sappy acidity on the finish. A good mouthful of fruit. (WS)

The 2011 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is unusually open and seductive, quite a change for a wine that is usually shy and slow to reveal the full breadth of its personality. Rose petal, spices and red-hued fruits hover in the glass, supported by fine, racy tannins. I can't remember a vintage of Bricco delle Viole that was this expressive young. The typical mid-weight, lifted Bricco delle Viole signatures are there, but at the same time, the contours are soft and the wine's personality beckons the taster with a total sense of seduction. Vajra fans should have some 2011 on hand to provide immediate gratification while some of the other recent vintages mature in the cellar.
