Medium red. A note of smoky reduction blew off to reveal open-knit aromas of wild strawberry and coffee. Sweet and densely packed, with red fruit and game flavors complicated and lifted by floral and pepper notes. Slightly dusty tannins are nicely supported by fruits and flowers on the back end.

Healthy deep red. Musky aromas of wild dark berries, licorice, violet, coffee and game, plus a whiff of animal fur. Sweet and lush but also nicely sappy, with ripe acidity giving cut to the flavors of musky dark berries and spices. Seamless, suave Volnay in a rather feminine style, finishing ith fine-grained tannins. Spreads out nicely to saturate the palate on the lingering aftertaste. A step up from the Caillerets this year.
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d’Or has a fragrant and more floral bouquet than the Caillerets at this early stage, nicely defined with blackcurrants and wild strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied, the fruit spectrum here more red with strawberry and raspberry notes, a dash of white pepper and a fine lattice of tannins on the refined finish. This is a lovely Volnay in the making: very pure and sensual.
