Da bere 0-0, Jancis Robinson MW, Jul 2013

Mid ruby with orange rim. Subdued. Iron. A little suppressed and not nearly as expressive as the other vintages and a little prickling on the nose. Same numbness on the palate. Very dry finish. Not really corked on the nose, but out of shape one way or the other. (WS)

The 2001 Barolo Via Nuova wafts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, red berries and spices. It shows quite a bit more energy and focus than the Cannubi. Via Nuova is a cooler site, but Boschis only used 50% new oak here, versus 100% for the Cannubi. Sweet herbal notes add complexity and intensity on the vibrant finish. This is a fascinating Barolo from Chiara Boschis that demands considerable attention for many reasons. The most obvious is the effect of 100% new French oak barrels with Nebbiolo. These two wines, when tasted side by side, make a compelling argument for restraint.

Her 2001s have matured nicely. I have a preference for the Via Nuova, a Barolo that generally plays second fiddle to the Cannubi. Not in 2001. Medium red. Subdued but pure aromas of raspberry, cherry, nutmeg, flowers and mint. Fresh, sharply delineated and firmly built; distinctly tighter and more backward today than the showier Cannubi. This will need a good six or seven years of patience.
