Sweet tobacco, dried cherries, plums, menthol and licorice are all nicely shaped by the warm resonance of the vintage. As is often the case, the Bricco Luciani shows a hint of French oak, which in this vintage is also felt in the wine's tannins and slightly oxidative-leaning flavors. The 2003 has aged gracefully, but there is no upside in cellaring bottles further.

The 2003 Barolo Bricco Luciani is another strong effort. It is at once sweeter and ampler than the normale, but also comes across as slightly more advanced than that wine. Expansive and balanced on the palate, this pretty Barolo offers a pretty core of fruit, spices and roasted coffee beans along with an open, accessible personality.
