Mid crimson. Sweet and chestnut-like on the nose with good, bright fruit on the palate. Still quite severe – very marked tannins. Chewy and uncompromising. Wait! (JR)

Medium red. Complex nose melds beefsteak tomato, mocha, tobacco, underbrush and black olive. Large-scaled, broad and rich, with a silky texture and a flavor of cherry. Fine-grained and long on the aftertaste.
(vinified with about 50% of the stems) Good deep red. Sweet, sappy aromas of cherry and minerals; here one sees the positive effect of the racking, which has cleaned up the wine's aromas. A bit subdued on the palate, but sweet, pure and concentrated, with a lovely sugar/acid balance. Finishes long and firmly tannic, with excellent breadth and lingering notes of herbs and spices. Etienne believes this is better than the Volnays in 2004.
Cask sample 1. Slightly oxidized sample. Tough and uncharming at the moment. May yet dazzle. Cask sample 2. Very, very rich and zappy. (JR)

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
