Punteggio 90+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2013

Good medium red. Expressive aromas of pipe tobacco, coffee and mocha. Fresh but a bit tight on the palate, showing some smoky oak lifted a floral perfume. Today the wine's fruit is blocked on the slightly drying back end by some apparent alcohol.

Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, wild herbs and underbrush take shape in the Alessandria's 2009 Barolo Monvigliero. There are plenty of the distinct savory/floral notes that distinguish Monvigliero, all given an extra kick of breadth by the warmth of the year. This is without question one of the best wines of the year. Fresh, vibrant and impeccable.

Commune of Verduno. Mid ruby with orange rim. Balsamic and a little dusty. Iron. Gripping tannins framing brooding fruit. Finish is complex if very slow to emerge. (WS)

The 2009 Barolo Monvigliero is the darkest and most powerful of the bunch, and it shows sturdy legs for cellar aging. Indian spice, autumnal flavors, tar and black licorice build intensity on the finish. The wine shows class and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2027. “In 30 years, we’ll be the ‘Alessandria Sisters’,” jokes Vittore Alessandria of his family brand now that his second daughter has entered the world. (Fratelli means “brothers” in Italian.) Founded in 1870, with historic cellars that date back to the 1700s, Vittore is the fifth generation to guide the hard work and efforts of this estate with vineyard sites in both Verduno (12 hectares) and Monforte d’Alba (two hectares).
