Very marked nose of sweet candy, and a chewy edge. Pungent and something aggressively tarry and mineral. The obvious sweetness does not especially appeal to me. But it may all resolve itself in time. (JR)

Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries and the silky Rocche tannins are all super-expressive in Ratti's 2010 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata. Here, too, the wine shows superb depth and intensity, but the new oak remains prominent. The Rocche spent two years in barriques, the first in French oak barriques (80% new), the second in cask.
The 2010 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata shows a subdued personality that builds in momentum as the wine warms in the glass. There’s a strong berry theme here that recalls creme de cassis or dried raspberry at the front of the bouquet. Close behind are oak-driven tones of spice, leather and tobacco. La Morra. Mid ruby with bricky tinges. The finest nose of the three 2010 Barolos. Lifted, perfumed and quite intense and sweet but it strikes a balance with the firm tannins. (WS)
