Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2016-2030, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2015

The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè exhibits a saturated garnet color with pretty ruby highlights. The wine opens to a delicate embroidery of dark fruit and floral aromas that grow in intensity and focus as the wine evolves in the glass. In fact, it reaches a surprising level of richness and fleshiness very quickly. The tannins are supple and smooth, but offer good structure and heft on the palate. Pajè ultimately offers more in terms of textural richness than you might expect given the lightness of the bouquet.

Bright medium red. Aromas of strawberry, red cherry, mocha and flowers are complicated by menthol and herbs. Tightly wound but already complex, with red fruit flavors complemented by sexy earth tones and firmed by a solid spine of acidity. In a distinctly cool, brisk style for the year, finishing with more aromatic lift than the Pora.

The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is open, round and inviting. In this vintage, the Pajè is quite floral and open, with fewer of the darker, mentholated, spiced notes that I associate with this site. I expect the 2009 to drink well pretty much right out of the gate. With time in the glass, more Pajè character emerges, but overall, this is a relatively straightforward offering with fine balance but less site-specific character than normal.
