Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2017-2032, Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, May 2024

Coravinned in 2017, kept in Hong Kong, and tasted in Hong Kong. Perfectly fresh nose, subtle red fruit and a little floral quality too. Absolutely no flaws at all, and the palate is super-fresh. If anything, it just doesn't seem 12 years old at all – still very youthful. It would be fascinating to test this against a freshly opened bottle of the same vintage to see if that would be more developed. For this Coravinned bottle, the main point is that there are no signs of oxidation or problems of any kind, and the wine itself has great persistence and complexity on the finish, with wood spice and dark fruit. Deep, slightly roasted aromas of blackberry, licorice and smoke. Sweet on the attack, then thick and fine-grained in the middle, with dense dark fruit flavors showing a strong licorice element and solid framing acidity. Finishes very long and ripely tannic, with a hint of warmth.

The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets has an attractive bouquet with scents of blackberry, briary and a touch of tea leaf. It is not a powerful set of aromatics, but it is very well-defined and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with quite pointed acidity. The fruit is black rather than red, with bilberry and blackcurrant notes, a touch of bitter cherry towards the linear and slightly austere finish. Drink this fine Fremiets over the next 8-12 years. Drink 2015-2024.

Good medium red. Cherry and a touch of minerality on the nose. Offers good purity to its flavors of sweet red fruits and chalky minerality. Showing more energy and lift than the premier cru, but less fat at this stage. Finishes with ripe, pliant, dusty tannins.
