After a prematurely oxidized bottle in a Beaune restaurant, I opened my last bottle of Carillon's 2012 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet at home a few days later. It performed better than the alarmingly amber-hued restaurant bottle, but it still exhibited considerably less tension and aromatic range than this wine showed only a few years ago. Drink up!

An appealingly layered nose features notes of citrus, pear, apple and acacia blossom. As is typically the case with this wine there is both excellent volume and fine mid-palate density as the abundant dry extract coats the palate and buffers the moderately firm acid spine on the delicious and persistent finish where a touch of pain grillé appears. The 2012 Puligny Montachet 1er Cru Champs Canet has a fresh bruised apple, pear and grass clipping scented bouquet that opens in the glass. The palate is taut on the entry with crisp acidity, edgy in the mouth, with hints of orange peel and spice toward the long finish. This is a complex Champs Canet that should age beautifully over the next couple of decades and fulfills the promise that it showed in barrel. eRobertParker.com.June, 2015
