Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2023-2027, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2023

The 2010 Barolo Cerequio is a dense, packed wine. It has all the depth and somber intensity it had as a young wine. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, mocha, licorice and dried flowers all meld together. The 2010 is not especially refined, but it has held up reasonably well. Ideally, I would like to see more Cerequio signatures. Even so, this is a solid effort.

Cerequio is one of the grand crus of Piedmont. Last spring a half-hectare sold for $2 million euros, a sum that had never been reached before. But there is a certain responsibility that comes with owning grand cru land, and that responsibility, at a minimum, entails making wines that are at the very least representative of site and of a certain level of quality. Chiarlo's 2010 Barolo Cerequio is dark, oaky and heavy none of which are signatures of Cerequio or this important Piedmont vintage.

The 2010 Barolo Cerequio is a tightly and compact expression that will definitely flesh out with more years in the bottle. At this point, it already shows an impressive level of complexity and balance that bodes well for its longevity. Small berry fruit, white truffle, hazelnut, crushed granite and balsam herb find seamless integration. Drink: 2016-2026. Importer: Kobrand Corp., www.kobrandwineandspirits.com

La Morra. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Closed with malty hints. Richly concentrated strawberry fruit neatly contrasted by waves of grainy tannins. Not for the shy but well made and long and with sheer class. (WS)
