A dark, ample wine, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe saturates the palate with superb intensity. The warm, dry growing season has softened many of the contours, perhaps also robbing the wine of some of its site specific nuance. There is plenty to like in the 2007, but the typically firm tannins and incisive tannins are pretty much buried by the fruit at this stage. Over time, the San Giuseppe starts to open up, but it remains a rich, strapping, reticent wine built on pure volume.

The winery’s top-shelf selection is the 2007 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boshis Vigna San Giuseppe that makes an immediate showing of underbrush, white truffle and autumn leaf. This is a classic portrayal of Nebbiolo with added layers of licorice and dried fruit that forge a clean link between the grape and the territory. Don’t put your guard down: This is an explosive wine with impressive power and fortitude. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. Various American Importers, including: Estate Wines, San Rafael, CA; tel. Castiglione Falletto. Mid ruby with orange rim. Just a little hint of horse saddle and a little locked on the nose. Closed too on the palate but with beautiful balance. Compact tannin and perfectly matching acidity. Very slow and not ready by far, but its class is obvious. (WS)

Dark cherries, plums, smoke and tar all emerge from the 2007 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe. Here the style is decidedly powerful and muscular. As is often the case, the San Giuseppe is a bigger Barolo than the Vignolo. Given the sheer density of the fruit, I imagine the San Giuseppe will take a little longer to fully come around and will also develop more slowly in bottle. There is a lot to look forward to here.
