Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Sep 2014

From the due-south vineyard where the winery is located, the 2010 Conca is a big, explosive Barolo. Rich, round and seamless the 2010 boasts terrific depth and pure resonance. Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, new leather and spices all flesh out as this voluptuous La Morra Barolo saturates the palate with intense layers of pure fruit. The 2010 spent two years in barriques, the first in French oak barriques (80% new), the second in cask.

Pietro Ratti’s 2010 Barolo Conca delivers a steady, deep personality. It wraps softly around the palate with velvety texture and enduring flavors of black fruit and ripe cherry. A subtle note of sour fruit appears on the close and speaks to the wine’s need to evolve with additional cellar aging. I look forward to revisiting Barolo Conca in ten years or more. La Morra. Mid ruby with orange rim. Ripe, sweet cherry laced with oak. Youthful richness but with great grip. Just enough acidity to keep it interesting. Very young. (WS)

(this wine was in 100% new barriques through the malolactic fermentation, then went into used barrels): Good bright, dark red. Reticent aromas of licorice, graphite and bitter chocolate. Sweeter and more powerful on entry than the Marcenasco, then quite tight in the middle palate, showing the excellent cut of the vintage's better examples. Quite long on the aftertaste, but this very young wine is currently dominated by its major tannins and will need at least six to eight years of cellaring. (Incidentally, the Rocche was in tank on its finings at the time of my visit and was not available for tasting.)
