Pale gold. Sweetish but pretty muted on the nose. Very lively and well made – great texture and slightly wild. Lots there. Great potential for development. Quite structured. (JR)

Candied apples and lilies burst from the glass of the 2002 Batard-Montrachet. Broad, hugely spicy, and fleshy, this intense wine coats the taster’s palate with vanilla-laced flowers, pears, and ginger. It is pure, balanced, concentrated, and offers a long, expressive finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2015. Maison Louis Latour has a different importer in each state.

The Latour family has been growing vines in Burgundy since at least 1731. Their négociant business – today one of the region’s biggest names – was founded in 1797. Still family-owned today, the company owns 48 hectares of vines, 27 of which are Grand Cru, as well as its own cooperage.
