Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2024-2036, Neal Martin, Apr 2024

The 1994 Pontet Canet was the vintage when Alfred Tesseron took charge and did a green harvest without telling his father. This has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry and light irony scents. It's lively and focused, perhaps less rustic than others. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive structure, less menthol than its peers, a keen line of acidity and a spicy, vibrant, yet classical finish. What a great Pontet Canet this is. Tasted at the château.

This is one of the finest Pauillac wines, a vintage that portended what was to come under the tenure of Alfred Tesseron. It is consistent with the bottle from earlier this year with that lovely, graphite-tinged nose and that cohesive, fresh, buoyant nose that is less foursquare when compared directly with the likes of Grand Puy Lacoste and Cos d’Estournel. This is a point and is a great achievement in the context of the season. (NM)

Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2004-2016, Jancis Robinson MW, Jan 2010

Pale rim. Scented and fragrant. Solid but racy underneath. Lively – like the 2004, much better than average for the vintage. (JR)

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2005-2025, Robert Parker, Jan 1998

One of the finest as well as longest-lived wines of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored 1994 needs 7-10 years of cellaring. This rich, impressive, full-bodied wine represents the finest Pontet-Canet produced since the 1961. This full-bodied, purely made wine is crammed with black currant fruit, as well as forbiddingly tannic and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Last tasted 1/97
