Note di degustazione
The 1999 Brunello Di Montalcino Sugarille is flush with savory character, including wild herbs, and opens to more floral tones underneath of black cherry, roses, and tobacco. It has wonderful concentration on the palate, revealing notes of balsamic, plum, cedar, and smoke. Full-bodied, tannins are present though the wine is in balance, and a salty, and quinine flourish on the back end gives it a thirst-quenching snap. Drink 2023-2030.

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarile, the selection, is darker in color than the regular bottling, more concentrated and substantial in flavor, riper and sweeter on both the nose and palate, and considerably denser and richer on the finish. Drink: 2005-2018. What’s missing here? Perhaps the spark, the inspiration which separates a very fine wine from an outstanding one. But perhaps we should stop expecting miracles in every vintage from this producer – he has never claimed, after all, to be able to walk on water. Bright ruby-red. Wilder, darker aromas of cassis, black cherry, bloody meat and roasted oak. Dense, huge and sweet, with superb depth of flavor but less early mid-palate lift than the Rennina. Notes of marzipan and Sacher torte. This rather brooding Brunello boasts an utterly suave, silky texture; big, broad, dusty tannins; and superb persistence. I believe this is just the fifth vintage in which Angelo Gaja has had full control over viticulture and vinification at this estate.
