The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts is the largest and broadest of the Puligny 1ers. It boasts gorgeous depth and sheer power, but is just a touch less finessed than the very best wines in the range. Honey, hazelnut, tangerine peel and dried flowers all flesh out on the finish. Today, the Referts comes across as a bit massive and heavy. At virtually any other estate the Referts would be a highlight, but the competition is tough at Jacques Carillon's cellar this year!

A slight hint of reduction does not materially detract from the equally floral nose that displays hints of acacia blossom and rose petal along with spice, citrus and pear aromas. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the mouth coating and borderline opulent middle weight flavors that possess a seductive texture on the gorgeously persistent finish. As it almost always is, this is seriously impressive and highly recommended. Tasted: Jun 15, 2014. Drink: 2018+
