Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2015-2020, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatières from Vincent Girardin has a tropical tinged bouquet with subtle pineapple and guava scents that feel a little obvious. The palate is generous on the entry, not complex but with plenty of flavor that veer towards the tropical, just like the aromatics. Not bad, but this is missing some class and not long-term. It does tend to oxidize on the glass, which is concerning.

Pale yellow-gold. Yellow peach and flowers on the nose, with some riper suggestions of tropical fruits. Suave and light on its feet, showing less richness and depth than the nose suggests. A lemony element gives the wine a slightly spiky character. Not quite the dimension or texture here for 90 points.

Good bright yellow. Fresh, high-pitched aromas of lemon and white flowers. Juicy, supple and penetrating, with an elegant quality to the ineffable citrus and spice flavors. Lovely concentration without being a bit overdone. Finishes very long and fine, with echoing fruits and flowers. A beauty in the making.

There is enough reduction present to dominate the fruit though it does appear to be ripe. This impression is reinforced by the high degree of ripeness of the opulent, indeed even unctuous flavors that possess almost unexpected intensity thanks to the firm supporting acidity that allows the finish to remain clean and dry with solid persistence. Again this isn't classic Folatières as there is less minerality than usual but with that proviso this is still quite pretty in its fashion. Tasted: Jun 15, 2014. Drink: 2018+
