The 2005 Darmagi, Angelo Gaja's Cabernet Sauvignon has aged quite nicely, although it can't really hold a candle to the Barbarescos. Except for the finish, which is a bit abrupt, the 2005 offers good varietal character in the style of a cooler, fresh vintage. Angelo Gaja first planted this site with Cabernet Sauvignon to show his father he could make an important Cabernet in Piedmont. There's probably not too many things Angelo Gaja can't do if he sets his mind to it. But he has also more than made his point. It's time to move on. Leaving Cabernet in a top-flight Barbaresco vineyard is truly darmagi. In other words, a shame.

Bright ruby-red. Sexy nose offers aromas of cassis, currant, flowers and smoky oak. Broad, lush and essentially gentle, with hints of exotic brown spices and a slight peppery nuance. Very classy, laid-back cabernet that finishes with fine, toothcoating tannins and impressive persistence. From vines planted in 1978.
Medium ruby. Very ripe, brooding aromas of cassis, violet, dark chocolate and minerals. Sweet, lush and rich, with a broad, generous texture and enlivening minerality. Finishes with building, ripe, chocolatey tannins and lush dark berry flavors.
