Vajra's 2004 Barolo Bricco delle Viole has put on a bit of weight in bottle, yet retains all of the signatures, notably the energy and precision that are so typical of this site in the Vergne sub-zone of Barolo, one of the highest in the entire production zone. Sweet floral notes meld into spices, mint and dark red cherries. Ethereal and beautifully perfumed through to the finish, the 2004 is absolutely gorgeous today.

Fairly deep ruby with orange rim. Very pretty nose of cherry fruit and spice and with lifted freshness. Only the beginning of tertiary aromas with a little touch of leather. Very elegant palate with high acidity and massive, fine tannin. Very youthful and long with powerful tannin. (WS)
The 2004 Barolo Bricco delle Viole has lost that touch of freshness that is still found in the 2005. The structured, layered 2004 has begun to develop wonderful complexity in its tobacco, leather, licorice, spices, minerals and menthol. In another few years it should be a magical wine, but for now patience is required. This is another sublime Barolo in the making.

Vajra is one of Piedmont’s best kept secrets. Here readers will enter a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level. Aldo and Milena Vajra’s passion comes through in spades in these terrific new releases, which I can’t recommend highly enough. Importer: Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel. (516) 327-0808
