A classic Elio Altare wine, the 2005 Barolo Arborina is big, rich and voluptuous, with gorgeous depth and overall resonance. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive, with striking richness and overall intensity. Here, too, the 2005 could still use time in bottle, although it is delicious today. The succulent, juicy finish is inviting, but the 2005 will be even better with more time in bottle. Rose petal, mint and a host of high-toned aromatics add the final shades of nuance.

Good full, deep red. Captivating, nuanced nose offers cherry, redcurrant, brown spices, roast coffee, underbrush, rose petal and licorice. Sweet and subtle, with wonderful aromatic character in the mouth over a firm spine. Here the tannins are much finer than those of the normale and the slightly balsamic finishing flavors of menthol, marzipan, dried herbs and spices show more lift and length.
Very rich and gorgeous and broad, exciting nerve and full and across the palate. Worth waiting quite a while for this. (JR)
The 2005 Barolo Arborina displays a darker profile of dark cherries, leather, tar, smoke and menthol, with tons of vibrancy laced throughout. This is an especially transparent, layered Arborina that is one of the standouts of the vintage. A recent bottle of the 1982 was still youthful and full of glory.
