Medium ruby. The Margheria comes across as the most classic of these wines owing to its somewhat austere, clenched personality. It offers a lovely ethereal nose with suggestions of flowers, spices and white truffles that is followed by red fruit flavors on a deceptively medium-bodied, structured frame of great length. Patience is the key here, but this will still be a delicious Barolo at age 20.

The 1999 Barolo Margheria, very ripe and sweet on the nose and with much licorice and chocolate as well, is rich, long, and of sizeable dimensions on the palate. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. Palish brick-red color. Reticent nose dominated by nuts, earth, smoke and tobacco. Tightly wound and backward, but appears to possess more intensity, vibrancy and spine than the '98 Margheria. Finishes tannic but fresh, with very good length.
