Ripe, bright cherry fruit in the nose of the Pousse d’Or 2007 Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrees is allied in the nose to subtle suggestions of things mineral, marine, and arboreal, and on the palate to tart chew of fruit skin; subtle bitterness of fruit pit; chalk and salt; shrimp shell reduction; as well as more discreet elements of forest floor. Enjoyment of this elegant, generous, long-lined expression of its great site need not be postponed, but I am sure the wine will hold up under – and perhaps even repay – 8-10 years’ cellaring. Patrick Landanger’s recent vintages seem to reflect increasing confidence (not to mention consistency), displaying a sense of restraint while combining richness and transparency to detail. Between the threat of rot and of roasting, he observes, the 2007s required more rigorous sorting than did the fruit from 2008, with a correspondingly lower crop, but Landanger and his crew did an outstanding job in the face of 2007 adversities as well as in 2008. Medium red. Redcurrant and cherry fruit aromas show a medicinal reserve and enticing floral lift. Intensely flavored and light on its feet, with saline, savory soil character adding interest to the red fruit, spice and mocha flavors. Finishes long and subtle, with a broad dusting of tannins. I find this more sophisticated than the Caillerets.
Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoke, mocha and coffee. Densely packed, silky and concentrated, with a strong soil character to the black fruit flavors. This boasts impressive density and complexity and really spreads out on the back end to saturate the palate. Finishes with terrific rocky energy and ripe tannins that are buffered by the wine's mid-palate fruit. Deep and long pinot noir. (For the uninitiated, the Clos des 60 Ouvrees is a monopole within the premier cru Caillerets.)
