Note di degustazione
The 1978 Batailley is a vintage that I have not encountered for a long time. It has quite a rustic, slightly green bouquet with scents of green bell pepper, gravel and dried herbs. There are remnants of fruit but only remnants. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly green tannin, moderate depth, light black fruit laced with tea and bay leaf. There is nothing offensive about this wine. It is just one that I feel might have been picked a little too early. Tasted at the château.

A solid, durable wine, the 1978 Batailley is quite attractive, with an exotic, moderately intense bouquet of cassis, anise, and spicy components. Full bodied, with surprisingly soft, supple fruit, round, ripe tannins, and good length, this is a very good effort from Batailley. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 2/84.

It was on the site of Batailley in 1453 that one of the final battles (or “batailles”) of the Hundred Years’ War took place. Today owned by the Castéja family, the Fifth Growth is renowned for producing wine that is the epitome of classic Claret.
