It was on the site of Batailley in 1453 that one of the final battles (or “batailles”) of the Hundred Years’ War took place. Today owned by the Castéja family, the Fifth Growth is renowned for producing wine that is the epitome of classic Claret.

We were fortunate to have a one-to-one tasting with Jean-Charles Cazes, the managing director of Chateau Lynch-Bages, Chateau Haut-Batailley and Chateau Ormes de Pez. Not only did we have the opportunity to taste the fantastic range of 2019 wines from the estates, but we were also given the opportunity to dig a little deeper into what makes Lynch-Bages such a special and unique wine in Pauillac. Ch. Lynch-Bages's recipe for success Whilst there is plenty of talk in Bordeaux these days about restraining the extraction of tannin  during vinification and for many Chateaux this has been to their benefit, it was also comforting to hear Jean-Charles talk with tenacity about how a high level of extraction remains a huge part of the recipe for Chateau Lynch-Bages and today remains a key factor in the wine’s signature structure and its consequent ageing ability.  There is confidence in this method and the levels of extraction the estate can go to, whilst retaining balance in the wines is impressive. It is no doubt thanks to the distinct gravel terroir in Pauillac, which seems particularly present at Lynch-Bages, where the magical union between Cabernet Sauvignon and gravel soils seem to exude possibly more than anywhere else. It is clear that in the past, the Chateaux that lack that special terroir but have copied the approach and style have ended up with over-extracted wines and a loss of character and freshness. Whether it is the trend in the reduction of extraction, better technology for the handling of tannins or a better understanding of individual terroirs and their varying abilities to absorb tannin whilst remaining balanced, high levels of extraction is on the decrease in the Medoc. But thankfully Lynch-Bages has not swayed to the fashion, knowing that their terroir is built for such a purpose. 

The 2019 is a stunning wine and Lynch Bages does seem to flourish in a warm vintage. Asked where the suppleness comes from in the 2019, Jean-Charles states "rather than any restriction on extraction, it is more to do with the glycerol-rich quality of the Merlot in 2019 that adds wonderful flesh to the distinct Cabernet Sauvignon structural profile. It is this warmth of the vintage that brings suppleness to the wine as the freshness exudes from the
union of graphite minerality and mouthwatering Cabernet tannins." The 2019 vintage Whilst it was a warm vintage in 2019, Jean-Charles states that "the winter of 2018-2019 was very wet and with high humidity periods both in April and June which provided a huge amount of water reserves that meant the vines suffered no vine stress despite what was to be a very hot, dry summer. Temperatures at times were similar to those seen in 2003 but whereas then the vines completely shut down, in 2019 they remained active and pushed on through, reaching a beautiful phenolic ripeness in the tannins." The Echo de Lynch-Bages is also easily the best example I can remember tasting and for Jean-Charles the quality of the second wine is a great indication of the overall quality of the vintage.  He states "whilst the Echo has distinct vineyards closer to the river with more clay in the soil, how the grapes behaved in these lesser sites is quite remarkable." The IPT (tannin levels) between the two wines are different with Echo at 78 IPT and Lynch-Bages at 91 IPT. While technically Echo is therefore less structured, Jean-Charles explains that "the tannins tend to be slightly grippier in the Echo and with the general refinement of the tannins being a signature of the 2019 vintage, it has produced a very serious second wine." The Lynch-Bages specially cultivated yeast Vinifications at Chateau Lynch-Bages are quite particular in that since 2013 the property has cultivated their own indigenous yeast that originates from their vineyard. They worked with the University of Bordeaux experimenting with the yeast strains until they found the perfect formula.  Using indigenous yeasts these days in Bordeaux is fairly rare due to the  potential risk of bacterial spoilage as alcohol levels have risen, but for Lynch, with their own cultivated yeast they have found what is essentially a compromise between the two, an incredibly
reliable fermentation, even in warmer vintages, whilst the indigenous yeast adds a distinct character and complexity to the Lynch-Bages flavour profile. Pioneers of Pauillac The reputation of Chateau Lynch-Bages as an over-achieving Fifth Growth was initially built up by Jean-Charles’ great-grandfather (his namesake) who was a real pioneer in Bordeaux during the 1950s and 1960s. Jean-Charles describes him as a real risk-taker. He was the first winemaker in Bordeaux at that time to take the risk of picking later.  Jean-Charles explains "in those days most producers in the Medoc were too nervous of autumn rains to hold out", the result harvesting grapes with unripe, green tannins, that required years to soften. Alongside Jean Bouteiller of Chateau Pichon Baron and Edouard Gasqueton of Chateau Calon Ségur, Jean-Charles believes  "they single-handedly steered Bordeaux towards a richer, riper style."  The wines of Lynch-Bages became recognised for their opulent, fruity style. But this was not without forfeit. The family used to joke about his risk-taking. In 1964 with the onset of rain he refused to pick, preferring to wait until the bad weather passed, but it just rained and rained and the vintage was ruined. But it was the great vintages of 1953, 1955, 1959  and 1961 along with the lesser vintages of 1952 and 1957 that built the reputation for Chateau Lynch Bages, producing some of the finest wines of the vintage.  Jean-Charles was in fact the first Cazes to own Chateau Lynch-Bages - taking a huge gamble in buying the property. He was initially a lowly baker in the town of Pauillac and he bought the estate in the 1930s during the Great Depression, seeing an opportunity during the economic turmoil. He managed to accrue the money to secure the estate. With very little capital he had to sell every single bottle he produced, and this continued when his son Andre took over and is the reason why Lynch Bages has such a small back catalogue of vintages at the estate.  But the quality of the wines was evident even back in the early days.  During the 1950s and 1960s Alexis Lichine (then owner of Chateau Prieuré-Lichine) used to hold blind tastings with the trade in Bordeaux – typically made up of negociants, courtiers and merchants. In these tastings, Chateau Lynch-Bages famously performed well.  Jean-Charles talks fondly about how his great-grandfather would carry Alexis Lichine’s little book of blind-tasting results with him everywhere he went and used this to build up the reputation of the Chateau to merchants around the world. It seems Chateau Lynch-Bages has been over-achieving ever since and if the 2019 is anything to go by it continues to produce some of the best wines in the Medoc whilst retaining such a strong Pauillac quality. The recent purchase of Chateau Haut-Batailley Jean-Charles carried on in his ancestors’ risk-taking footsteps when he purchased Chateau Haut-Batailley in 2017 - a gamble that just a few years later seems to be paying off. The site is positioned in some of the finest terroir in Pauillac, neighbouring the vineyards of Chateau Latour, Chateau Pichon Lalande and Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste. Bordering Saint Julien the wine is much less structured than Lynch-Bages but more seductive and elegant. 2019 is undoubtedly the top wine they have made at the estate. 
 With Cabernet Sauvignon performing so well in 2019 they were able to put more than ever before in the blend, producing real clarity on the fruit and a real flair and energy on the finish. The wine is very different in style to Chateau Lynch-Bages, more of a cross between the seductive elements of Saint Julien and the graphite minerality of Pauillac. Both the second wine Verso and Chateau Haut-Batailley are fantastic additions to the Cazes portfolio.  Their third Chateau in the Medoc – Chateau Ormes de Pez in Saint Estephe, is arguably one of the best value wines in Bordeaux producing fantastic consistency in recent vintages and adept at handling the different tannin profiles you find in Saint Estephe. The wine is juicy, fleshy and more open-knit than the Pauillac wines but has a wonderful power and seriousness despite its roundedness. The quality and purity of the fruit typical of 2019 is also outstanding at Chateau Ormes de Pez. All three properties come highly recommended. Tasting notes Chateau Lynch-Bages 2019, Pauillac Gorgeous dense, focused aromas -dark black fruit both fresh and ripe, scented tea leaf, clove, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, graphite. Stacked fine, close-knit tannins provide impressive detail, density and intensity on the palate. There is fantastic energy in this wine, pulsing as a
glycerol-rich fleshy concentration of fruit washes over a stony minerality. There is finesse and power and so much minerality. Stunning wine. 
Echo de Lynch-Bages 2019, Pauillac Lovely lifted tones to the wine - open dark berry fruit, sweet leather and scented clove as well as distinct graphite minerality and pencil lead. Succulent palate, juicy, fleshy glycerol rich and then the tannins start to define structure underneath a generous fruited full body. Integrated,

Chateau Haut-Batailley 2019, Pauillac Inky purple colour, Brooding dark / black fruit aromas. High-quality oak tones of scented clove, scented tea leaf and dark chocolate. Deep, beautifully ripe, delineated black fruit - cassis, blackberry, plum - puckering but refined, structural tannins. Earthy, savoury tones on the finish. The sustain on the finish and the energetic lift add complexity to the wine. Excellent. Click here to buy. 
Verso 2019 (Second Wine of Chateau Haut Batailley), Pauillac Dry spice, brooding nose. Soft, juicy blackberry coulis fruit - fleshy and generous. But there is also detail on the palate, the tannins have structure and layers. It doesn't have the refinement of tannins that the Haut-Batailley has but it's still serious. Refreshing acid and mineral freshness offset the generous fruit. Definitely over-achieving in 2019. 
Chateau Ormes de Pez 2019, Saint Estephe Juicy, open-knit fruit with distinct savoury saddle leather and violet St Estephe tones. Juicy, opulent, generous fruit with lovely mid-palate weight and concentration. Tannins are sinewy but beautifully integrated, and textural giving lovely framework and depth to the palate. Quando il nostro team è arrivato a Saint-Emilion sotto cieli soleggiati per iniziare il nostro pellegrinaggio annuale en primeur, sarebbe comprensibile pensare che l’umore nel campo fosse alquanto apprensivo. Fin dalla fine della campagna di Borgogna, come ogni primavera, i riflettori si spostano su Bordeaux e la stampa intorno all’annata 2024 è stata piuttosto pessimistica – con uno sfondo segnato da discorsi sui dazi negli Stati Uniti, prezzi in calo e l’eterna domanda degli en primeur come meccanismo di distribuzione ancora valido oggi. 
 Trovo così spesso che – ai primeurs – le annate vengano ridotte a generalizzazioni che non rendono mai giustizia al variegato terroir della regione. Essendo questa la mia ottava campagna, mi ricordo ogni anno che questa settimana è molto più che una semplice opportunità per assaggiare l’ultima annata. È un’occasione per trascorrere del tempo con chi è dietro le botti e ascoltare la loro storia, per permettere ai produttori di condividere in prima persona la loro visione dell’annata. Con oltre 50 visite prenotate, avevamo parecchio su cui affondare i denti prima di poter trarre conclusioni significative. La nostra prima visita della settimana è stata a Cheval Blanc – e ha fornito un eccellente primo cartina di tornasole per determinare la qualità dell’annata. Il Direttore Tecnico Pierre-Olivier Clouet ha evidenziato le sfide portate dalla pura quantità di pioggia in quello che è stato uno degli inverni più piovosi per la regione da quando sono iniziate le registrazioni. E le diffuse precipitazioni – dall’autunno del 2023 in poi – sono state l’inizio di una serie di sfide che avrebbero messo alla prova anche i vignaioli più esperti. 
 Dopo solo la nostra prima mattina di degustazioni, potevamo vedere che l’annata 2024 stava presentando un livello di eterogeneità e diversità non visto nelle più recenti annate solari come il 2022 e il 2023. Sfide come peronospora, fioritura irregolare, scarsa allegagione e botrite potevano essere affrontate in un numero qualsiasi di modi con livelli di successo variabili – i cui risultati sono stati affascinanti. 
 Il nostro rapporto completo sull’annata, previsto per la prossima settimana, esaminerà più da vicino le condizioni dell’anno, le reazioni dei produttori e lo stile dei vini. Ma, dalle nostre degustazioni sulla Riva Destra, siamo rimasti piacevolmente sorpresi dalla qualità emersa in mezzo alla varietà. 
 I migliori vini di Saint-Emilion e Pomerol sembrano aver favorito una vendemmia più tardiva, rischiando di perdere frutto mentre aspettavano la maturità fenolica. Molti dei nostri preferiti hanno aromaticità meravigliosamente ariose che sono al contempo espressive e concentrate – bilanciando il frutto succoso del Merlot con la trama e la struttura del Cabernet. Quest’anno, abbiamo trascorso poco meno di due settimane a Bordeaux – il nostro viaggio di degustazioni en primeur più lungo di sempre. Questo ci ha permesso di inserire un paio di visite extra nel nostro programma fittissimo. Una di queste è stata a Guillot Clauzel, una minuscola proprietà di due ettari annidata a Pomerol a due passi da Le Pin, sotto la guida dell’enologo Guillaume Thienpont dal 2018. La nostra visita ha evidenziato che era chiaramente possibile fare vini eccellenti nel 2024 a prescindere dal prezzo o dalla scala. 
 Lo stesso vale sulla Riva Sinistra. In un anno in cui la resilienza del Cabernet è emersa con forza, i migliori vini sono piuttosto classici. C’è un’impressionante purezza del frutto al centro del palato unita a una spina dorsale di acidità che porta lunghezza e slancio. Saint-Estèphe e Pauillac sembrano essere state particolarmente impegnative, con risultati più disomogenei (ma alcune stelle senza remore – basti guardare Montrose), mentre Saint-Julien, ancora una volta, offre un profilo più coerente. Gli stili più leggeri di Margaux e Pessac-Léognan forse si allineano meglio con lo stile naturale dell’annata, e qui ci sono vini particolarmente promettenti. (Sebbene raramente al centro dell’attenzione, vale la pena sottolineare anche la qualità di alcuni bianchi quest’anno.) 
 Non ricordiamo un anno in cui sia stato così importante mettere gli stivali a terra e degustare en primeur – e prendersi il tempo per parlare con i produttori per capire le specificità dell’annata. I produttori ormai si aspettano un livello di domande senza eguali quando il nostro team si presenta. Ora che la polvere si è posata, possiamo riporre sputacchiere (e quaderni) e tirare le somme durante il weekend di Pasqua. Ci aspettiamo un flusso costante di uscite a partire già da martedì prossimo con Batailley e Pontet-Canet previste rispettivamente per il 22 e 23. Qualunque cosa la campagna abbia in serbo per noi, sappiamo che il 2024 è un anno in cui essere selettivi. I consumatori disposti a guardare oltre eventuali idee preconcette sull’annata saranno ricompensati.

Bordeaux 2024: prime impressioni

When the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce ranked Bordeaux’s leading estates by price for the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855, I doubt they anticipated we’d still be using it over 150 years later. Napoleon III had asked the team to put together an exhibition for the world fair, and the Chamber of Commerce neatly passed the buck to the region’s courtiers or brokers, asking them to create a list of the region’s best wines, broken into five tiers. They did so in just two weeks, basing the list almost exclusively on price.  The original classification ranked 58 properties, from First to Fifth Growth, or Premier to Cinquième Cru Classé (with Cru Classé literally translating as “classed/classified growth”). At the very top of this quality pyramid was Ch. Lafite, deemed the “premier des premiers” of the time. The properties were almost exclusively in the Médoc, with Ch. Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan the one exception.  It is often said that there has only been one change since the 1855 classification’s creation, however that’s not quite true. Ch. Cantemerle was added in 1856 (having been left out of the original ranking by accident). Ch. Pichon split in two, the Léoville estate into three and Batailley was also divided – but two properties also merged (Pouget and Pouget Lassale), while Dubignon was absorbed entirely by other addresses. Interestingly, Ch. Gloria consists exclusively of vineyards that were classified originally, although the château wasn’t classified in 1855.   The most significant change, and the one most often mentioned, was in 1973 when Ch. Mouton Rothschild was upgraded to First Growth status. The property had only just been acquired by the Rothschild family in the 1850s, so was intially ranked as a Second Growth but Baron Philippe de Rothschild made it is life mission to get it officially recognised as one of the Left Bank’s five leading addresses. For years the property’s labels had read “Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis” (“First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton I am”), which was changed to “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (“First I am, second I was, Mouton doesn’t change”) after the Baron’s bid was successful, and the estate’s premiership was legally recognised.  There are 61 estates in today’s classification, with five First Growths, 14 Second Growths, 14 Third Growths, 10 Fourth Growths and 18 Fifth Growths. Unlike in Saint-Emilion’s classification, a property is free to buy and sell vineyards, with their expansion or contraction not impacting their classed growth status.  Although the classification has never been reviewed, it remains largely (and surprisingly) accurate – the premium price associated with higher status and quality seemingly providing sufficient incentive for producers, and the market effectively deciding on a property’s status.  Today there is also an unofficial group known as the “super seconds” – estates that are thought to produce wines that are as good as those of the First Growths. This includes Pichon Baron, Pichon Comtesse, Lynch-Bages, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, Palmer, Pontet-Canet and La Mission Haut-Brion.  While we tend to consider only the red wines of the northern Gironde in reference to the 1855 classification, the sweet whites of Sauternes and Barsac were also ranked. The wines were only put into two classes, with 21 estates included. Nine estates were deemed worthy of First Growth status, 11 as Second Growths, with Ch. d’Yquem earning its own special category as “Premier Cru Supérieur”.  As with the red classification, the number of estates has grown as they have divided over the years (such as the Doisy estates), with one disappearing entirely (Pexoto – its vineyards are now part of Ch. Rabaud-Promis). There have otherwise been no changes.  The sweet wine classification is of little consequence today, however the estates collectively represent 45% of the surface area of Sauternes and Barsac, and produce 30% of the area’s wines today.  Beyond the 1855 classification, the Left Bank also has its Crus Bourgeois and Crus Artisan, as well as the 1959 Graves classification (read more about these here). The Right Bank still only has the Saint-Emilion classification – one that has caused enough controversy to put Pomerol off doing anything similar. Nel complesso, il raccolto 2024 è stato il più piccolo di Bordeaux dal 1991 – con la regione che ha prodotto 332 milioni di litri di vino. Ciò è in parte dovuto al calo della superficie vitata, con una resa media di 35 hl/ha – leggermente superiore a quella delle annate 2021, 2017 o 2013. Approfondendo, tuttavia, emerge una differenza significativa tra la Riva Sinistra e la Riva Destra – con 34,4 hl/ha a Saint-Emilion, Pomerol e Fronsac, contro una media di 30,8 hl/ha nel Médoc e nelle Graves.

Sebbene sia stata comunque eterogenea, la dimensione più piccola delle tenute ha favorito il successo – rendendo più facile trattare e vendemmiare nelle strette finestre di tempo asciutto. Ovunque ci si trovasse, tuttavia, è stato un anno impegnativo: come ha detto Christian Moueix, “Il sole non si può sostituire.” Oltre al meteo più coperto, la grandine ha colpito Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac e Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno, con alcune tenute che hanno perso l’intero raccolto, sebbene Pomerol e Saint-Emilion siano in gran parte scampate.

 Per Noëmie Durantou (Ch. l’Eglise-Clinet), il 2024 è stato un avversario duro – ma uno contro cui sapeva di poter vincere, e ripensandoci, che partita è stata: come certamente indicano i suoi vini. Per lei, ci sono stati diversi elementi chiave nella stagione di crescita: la copertura nuvolosa che ha ridotto l’escursione termica (ricorda notti calde, insonni), l’invaiatura tardiva, le mattine nebbiose che hanno aumentato la pressione della botrite in prossimità della vendemmia e il livello di umidità dell’anno – 80% a Pomerol, contro un più normale 50-60%. 
 La grandine che ha colpito Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno è sconfinata un po’ a Pomerol, ma la maggior parte delle tenute è sfuggita a impatti seri – con solo un leggero tocco avvertito a Lafleur a Feytit-Clinet, per esempio. Il trattamento delle vigne ha posto una sfida aggiuntiva per il team di Clinet, che deve tenere conto dell’orario della scuola adiacente, lavorando attorno alla presenza di bambini e/o genitori, oltre alle condizioni inclementi. 
 La vendemmia è iniziata a Pomerol leggermente prima che nella vicina Saint-Emilion, prendendo il via già dal 16 settembre, ma la maggior parte ha iniziato a portare in cantina il Merlot dal 20 del mese, e il Cabernet è stato completato entro il 4 ottobre (sebbene alcuni produttori avessero tutto in cantina entro la fine di settembre). Le rese sono variate in modo significativo – dal secondo raccolto più piccolo dal 1991 a Belle-Brise al secondo più grande degli ultimi 25 anni a Lafleur. 
 Jeremy Chasseuil (Feytit-Clinet) ha sottolineato come, per lui, lasciare il vino sulle fecce per due mesi sia stato fondamentale – aiutando a costruire la texture, rilasciando polisaccaridi che conferiscono peso al centro bocca del vino. Sebbene il 2024 non abbia prodotto gli stili più opulenti di Pomerol, i migliori conservano una trama soffice e un’esoticità negli aromi che completa l’acidità naturalmente elevata dell’anno. Sebbene la qualità non sia del tutto coerente qui, ci sono molti punti di forza. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pomerol: Belle-Brise, Eglise-Clinet, Guillot Clauzel, La Conseillante, Lafleur, Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan Saint-Emilion 
 C’è stata una differenza notevole tra Pomerol e Saint-Emilion – con Saint-Emilion che ha visto significativamente più pioggia tra aprile e giugno, con 278 mm contro 199 mm a Pomerol. Nonostante ciò, l’altopiano calcareo della regione ha dato il meglio – permettendo all’acqua di drenare lontano dalle vigne, nonostante abbia raggiunto livelli record (ad Ausone, il livello nel loro pozzo è stato il più alto di sempre). Agosto, tuttavia, è stato significativamente più secco sulla Riva Destra – con circa la metà delle precipitazioni normali. 
 Qui la vendemmia è iniziata un po’ più tardi. Sebbene alcuni abbiano iniziato già il 17 settembre (Cheval Blanc, Canon, per esempio), la maggior parte ha aspettato fino al 27, e diverse tenute hanno rimandato fino ai primi di ottobre. Nonostante le sfide dell’anno (“È stata una guerra,” ha detto Pierre-Olivier Clouet di Cheval Blanc), la resa complessiva dell’appellazione è risultata abbastanza nella media – sebbene variata tra le tenute. 
 Ad Angélus, è stata la 40ª vendemmia di Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, e la bottiglia reca una sezione di tronco d’albero con 40 anelli in tributo. A Ch. Beauséjour, è stata la prima annata prodotta nella nuova cantina di Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, qualcosa di cui è stata particolarmente grata, poiché le ha permesso di suddividere il vigneto in parcelle più piccole e lavorare con maggiore precisione. 
 Saint-Emilion è così grande che inevitabilmente quest’anno c’è un’ampia gamma di vini. Sebbene alcuni possano risultare eccessivamente taglienti, austeri o astringenti, ci sono vini molto impressionanti, testurizzati, stratificati che mantengono tensione e offrono al contempo abbondanza di frutto e peso. Cheval Blanc, per esempio, è un vino molto serio che avrà bisogno di tempo – un vero contrasto con molti dei 2024 destinati a essere approcciabili presto. Vale la pena evidenziare Ch. Laroque, una tenuta che osserviamo da un po’, dove David Suire continua a produrre vini dal valore straordinario. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Emilion: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Clos de Sarpe, Figeac, L’If, Laroque, Tertre Roteboeuf RIVA SINISTRA 
 Le rese sulla Riva Sinistra – a parte i bianchi – sono state in genere inferiori rispetto alla Destra. Variano significativamente tra le tenute, tuttavia, con rese che vanno dal minimo storico alla normalità. Sebbene ci siano annate in cui siti minori nel Médoc e nell’Haut-Médoc eccellono, il 2024 in gran parte non lo è stato – questa è stata un’annata in cui la qualità del terroir, così come i mezzi per effettuare una selezione rigorosa, sono stati fondamentali. Abbiamo riscontrato che la qualità qui era ancora più eterogenea che nel resto della Gironda, tuttavia ci sono ancora vini brillanti da trovare. 
 Saint-Estèphe 
 La qualità a Saint-Estèphe è mista nel 2024. La posizione più fresca e settentrionale del comune non è stata necessariamente un vantaggio quest’anno, né lo sono stati i suoli più ricchi di argilla – che sono stati un tale vantaggio nelle recenti annate calde e secche. Le tenute con vigne su ghiaie ben drenanti se la sono cavata meglio, tuttavia ci sono molte variabili nell’equazione della qualità quest’anno. 
 Sebbene non tutte le tenute abbiano prosperato, ci sono qui picchi seri, con Montrose in lizza per il vino dell’annata – offrendo un livello di densità e complessità che si è davvero distinto nelle nostre degustazioni. È la seconda versione del loro Grand Vin a provenire esclusivamente dalla Terrazza Quattro (T4), una decisione che sta chiaramente dando frutti, e abbiamo anche avuto il primo assaggio del vino non ancora rilasciato prodotto da T3, chiamato “Terrasse 3” – un vino che varrà la pena cercare. Il team di Montrose ha sottolineato come l’appellazione abbia visto meno pioggia tra il 1° agosto e l’8 settembre rispetto a quelle più a sud, ricevendo solo 50 mm in questo periodo critico (contro 80 mm per Margaux e 120 mm per Pessac-Léognan), qualcosa che hanno ritenuto fondamentale per il loro successo. 
 Calon-Ségur è stata una delle diverse tenute che hanno scelto di abbandonare l’organico quest’anno, usando trattamenti convenzionali tra il germogliamento e la fioritura, prima di tornare al loro regime normale, consentendo loro di ottenere la stessa resa del 2023 a 45 hl/ha (contro 29 hl/ha a Cos d’Estournel, che ha proseguito il percorso verso la certificazione biologica). Il Direttore Tecnico Vincent Millet – alla guida dell’intero portafoglio di tenute di Calon, incluso Ch. le Prieuré a Saint-Emilion e Vray Croix de Gay a Pomerol – ha osservato come il Cabernet Sauvignon a maturazione più tardiva sia stato particolarmente delicato quest’anno, rendendo la Riva Sinistra più impegnativa della Destra nell’annata. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Estèphe: Montrose Pauillac 
 Pauillac ha avuto la resa più bassa di qualsiasi comune della Riva Sinistra quest’anno, con una media nell’appellazione di 29,5 hl/ha (contro una media ventennale di 45,7 hl/ha). Tra le tenute, le cifre sono variate enormemente – dal minuscolo 11 hl/ha prodotto a Ch. Latour (un livello più tipico di Sauternes) ai 33 hl/ha di Ch. Lafite Rothschild, per esempio, guardando a due tenute che lavorano in biologico. Giugno è stato più secco qui che altrove, il che significa che le vigne hanno iniziato a soffrire di stress idrico prima – con alcune proprietà che hanno persino affermato di aver visto lo sviluppo delle viti fermarsi in agosto, con le prime piogge a fine mese come gradita tregua. 
 La vendemmia qui si è protratta per i primi 10 giorni di ottobre, con la botrite che ha influito in modo significativo sulle rese. Pichon Baron ha stimato di aver perso circa 10 hl/ha per marciume – solo uno dei sacrifici che hanno reso il 2024 un’annata così costosa da produrre. I vini risultanti tendono ad avere quote più alte di Cabernet Sauvignon, e variano sia nello stile che nella qualità. In generale, si tratta di Pauillac di stile più leggero, senza la fermezza o la potenza che questa appellazione può spesso offrire. Sebbene alcuni non abbiano sufficiente concentrazione o struttura, i migliori hanno la tipica grafite di Pauillac, completata da floreali più delicati, frutto croccante, una qualità salina e tannini fini. 
 L’annata segna anche i 100 anni di Batailley sotto la famiglia Borie-Castéja, meritando un’etichetta commemorativa per questo Claret di riferimento, oltre a un formato speciale Marie-Jeanne. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pauillac: Batailley, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Comtesse, Pontet-Canet Saint-Julien 
 Ai Chx Léoville e Langoa Barton, Damien Barton Sartorius ha paragonato il 2024 alla corsa di una maratona – faticosa, ma soddisfacente, e che ti lascia pronto a iscriverti alla prossima. La resa media per l’appellazione è stata leggermente superiore a quella di Pauillac, con 32,5 hl/ha – comunque quasi il 25% in meno rispetto alla media trentennale. Come più a nord, tuttavia, la media è solo una media: Beychevelle ha raccolto a 43 hl/ha, mentre la selezione ha portato la resa a 23,6 hl/ha a Ducru-Beaucaillou (con il team che ha scartato quasi 10 hl/ha), e le cifre sono variate in modo significativo tra le tenute. 
 A Beychevelle, Philippe Blanc ha spiegato come, dopo appena 4 mm di pioggia tra il 1° e il 28 agosto, la pioggia sia ricominciata e non si sia più fermata. Il loro Merlot è stato maggiormente colpito dalla peronospora e quindi l’assemblaggio è più alto in Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) – qualcosa riscontrato anche altrove. La cattiva fioritura e la conseguente colatura hanno comportato grappoli più spargoli, ha spiegato Barton Sartorius, qualcosa che ritiene li abbia davvero aiutati a evitare una significativa pressione di botrite a fine stagione. 
 La dimensione più piccola di Saint-Julien fa sì che sia un po’ più coerente di Pauillac, tuttavia non è del tutto uniforme. Il frutto tende a essere un po’ più dolce, pur restando sullo spettro del rosso piuttosto che del nero, i vini offrono un’acidità brillante e i migliori tannini fini e buon equilibrio, con il rovere perfettamente integrato. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Julien: Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Barton Margaux 
 Sebbene nessuna appellazione sia coerente nel 2024, Margaux ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti. Le precipitazioni potrebbero essere state più alte qui che più a nord, ma il microclima leggermente più caldo e i suoli poco profondi hanno forse permesso alle uve di maturare prima e più pienamente. Ci sono ancora vini leggeri e taglienti, tuttavia realtà come Palmer, Margaux e Rauzan-Ségla hanno prodotto vini tra i migliori dell’annata. 
 Ch. Margaux ha indicato la fioritura precoce come un vantaggio significativo nell’annata – “una benedizione”, nelle parole di Aurélien Valance. Il 2024 avrebbe dovuto essere l’anno finale della conversione biologica a Ch. Rauzan-Ségla, e quando la pressione della peronospora è aumentata, il team ha discusso seriamente se perseverare o meno. Con l’approvazione dei proprietari, hanno deciso che a lungo termine fosse la scelta giusta continuare – sapendo che avrebbe significato un sacrificio in resa (con un raccolto finale di 30 hl/ha), ma sarebbe stato anche il loro primo vino certificato biologico. Il team di Palmer – da lungo tempo biodinamico – ha dovuto effettuare fino a 10 trattamenti a mano, impossibilitato a portare i trattori tra le vigne. 
 Comunque lo si spieghi, i risultati qui parlano da soli – con vini che combinano graziosi, inebrianti floreali con frutto dolce e soffice, oltre a tannini fini ma persistenti, cipriati: vini seri che meriterebbero considerazione in qualsiasi annata. Questa è stata anche l’unica appellazione in cui i secondi vini – come Alter Ego de Palmer e Pavillon Rouge – hanno mostrato una qualità reale. 
 I nostri preferiti a Margaux: Brane-Cantenac, Giscours, Palmer, Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla Graves + Pessac-Léognan 
 Le rese per i rossi a Pessac-Léognan sono state – in modo insolito per l’anno – nella media. I bianchi sono discussi separatamente sotto, ma i rossi di Graves e Pessac-Léognan sono stati vari quanto altrove. Ci sono, tuttavia, alcuni vini affascinanti e alcuni molto impressionanti che smentiscono la reputazione dell’annata. 
 Questa regione meridionale ha visto più pioggia in agosto, non beneficiando forse dello stress idrico che è stato così importante altrove – ma la pioggia in quel mese non è stata eccessiva, solo in linea con la norma. A Smith Haut Lafitte, settembre ha visto più di tre volte la pioggia media (164 mm contro 48 mm), rendendo la vendemmia tutt’altro che facile. 
 Sebbene Carmes Haut-Brion abbia raccolto 40 hl/ha, ha vinificato solo 24 hl/ha – un altro esempio della selezione estrema messa in atto quest’anno dalle tenute focalizzate sulla qualità. Guillaume Pouthier – che offre sempre una prospettiva unica su un’annata – sta facendo qualcosa di diverso nell’affinamento quest’anno, riducendo la temperatura della cantina da 16°C a 12°C durante i due anni di élevage, per preservare il profilo fruttato del vino e favorire la precipitazione tartarica, riducendo così il livello di acidità. Il tempo dirà come funzionerà, quindi sarà affascinante degustare di nuovo il vino in bottiglia. 
 Domaine de Chevalier ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti quest’anno e, sebbene lavorino da lungo tempo in biologico e biodinamico, quest’anno hanno preso la difficile decisione di usare trattamenti convenzionali – qualcosa che è stato premiato, con rese generose (48 hl/ha) e qualità molto elevata. 
 I nostri preferiti in Graves + Pessac-Léognan: Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, La Mission Haut-Brion Bianchi secchi 
 Alcuni parlano in estasi dei bianchi secchi del 2024 – e, sebbene ci siano assolutamente bianchi brillanti, la qualità è ben lontana dall’essere uniforme. 
 Le prime uve di Sauvignon Blanc sono state raccolte a Sauternes il 20 agosto, sebbene la maggior parte dei produttori con cui abbiamo parlato abbia vendemmiato tra la fine di agosto e l’inizio di settembre, con l’ultimo Sémillon portato in cantina il 23 settembre. Le rese sono state da medie a generose, con la peronospora molto meno problematica – 30 hl/ha a Margaux, 32 hl/ha a Smith Haut Lafitte, 38 hl/ha per Haut-Brion e La Mission Haut-Brion, 48 hl/ha a Domaine de Chevalier, per esempio, mentre sulla Riva Destra la scuderia Lafleur ha portato in cantina circa 40 hl/ha e il team di Nicolas Thienpont ha raccolto rispettivamente 43 hl/ha e 47 hl/ha ad Alcée e Charmes-Godard. 
 Le condizioni più fresche hanno preservato una spina dorsale di acidità nei vini, con pH conseguentemente bassi – analiticamente parlando, i vini hanno l’acidità più alta dal 2014. Gli aromatici sono precisi, dominati dal verde piuttosto che dal frutto a nocciolo, e certamente non all’estremità più tropicale dello spettro. Se mai, alcuni vini possono risultare un po’ verdi o esili. Come ha spiegato il Direttore Tecnico di Smith Haut Lafitte, Fabien Teitgen, la sfida era ottenere una maturità che rivestisse l’acido dell’annata, la polpa che completasse lo scheletro. La proprietaria Florence Cathiard ritiene che il risultato sia “uno dei [loro] migliori bianchi”. Allo stesso modo a Ch. Margaux, hanno fatto un po’ più di bâtonnage per dare peso al Pavillon Blanc – ed è una delle stelle dell’anno. 
 In alcuni, si avverte l’eccesso d’acqua della stagione di crescita – le rese generose sfociano in vini che non hanno sufficiente concentrazione. Il Sauvignon Blanc sembra essersela cavata meglio del Sémillon, più suscettibile al marciume e più difficile da portare a maturità fenolica – e molti dei nostri preferiti erano puro Sauvignon, o fortemente guidati dalla varietà. 
 I paragoni sono stati vari – sebbene il 2021 fosse comune per la spina acida e le condizioni più fresche. A Lafleur, Omri Ram è convinto che il 2024 Les Champs Libres sia uno dei loro migliori, posizionandosi comodamente accanto al 2023 e al 2021. A Ch. Margaux, Aurélien Valance ha guardato a un’annata sorprendente – la calda stagione 2018, ma in cui il vino ha un’impronta salina simile a quella riscontrata nel 2024. 
 I nostri preferiti: Charmes-Godard, De Fieuzal Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Haut-Brion Blanc, Les Champs Libres e Grand Village Blanc, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux Sauternes + Barsac 
 È facile presumere che, poiché pioggia e marciume hanno minacciato il raccolto nel 2024, sia stato perfetto per i vini dolci di Sauternes e Barsac: ma sono necessarie condizioni molto specifiche perché si instauri la muffa nobile, e se non vengono soddisfatte si ottiene marciume grigio – entrambi causati dallo stesso fungo, Botrytis cinerea. Il primo passaggio a Sauternes tendeva a svolgersi a fine settembre, con condizioni alternate di bagnato e asciutto che incoraggiavano lo sviluppo della muffa nobile dall’inizio di ottobre. Ma le squadre hanno dovuto combattere anche marciume grigio e acescenza – e un alto grado di selezione è stato fondamentale. A La Tour Blanche, hanno prodotto appena 3 hl/ha per il loro Grand Vin, una resa minuscola che eguaglia quella del 2021. 
 Le uve che sono arrivate in vasca offrivano livelli di acidità elevati, aromaticità precise, ma non la lussureggiante concentrazione delle annate davvero migliori. In base alle nostre degustazioni, i vini risultanti sono da buoni a molto buoni, se non proprio eccezionali, ma possono avere particolare appeal per i consumatori che preferiscono uno stile di vino dolce più leggero – con acidità più brillante e livelli di zucchero residuo leggermente inferiori. Sono vibranti e puri, con molta concentrazione, sebbene non così edonistici come gli anni più celebrati – e saranno approcciabili in una fase più precoce della loro vita.

2020 Ch. Tour Saint-Christophe, Saint-Emilion  There is lovely restraint to Tour Saint-Christophe this year, only furthering this wine’s already huge appeal, considering the overall quality and moderate price point. High-quality oak provides a lovely toasted, peppery spice aroma on the nose that interplays beautifully with lifted, lavender tones. There is a lovely finesse to the blackcurrant and plum fruit on the palate. It is concentrated, juicy and succulent, but not at all over-ripe. The fruit has a pristine character matching the detailed tannins, making for a moreish finish. With impressive length and fantastic balance, this is a top-value buy – and has never been better. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.  2020 Ch. Laroque, Saint-Emilion  Quality at Ch. Laroque continues to rise and David Suire has crafted a superb 2020. Despite being a blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, this wine has real freshness and an herbaceous edge to it. The nose is scented and enticing with aromas of Darjeeling tea, ripe plummy fruit and a fresher more redcurrant note. It’s a tight little wine at present, with a compacted palate full of promise and fine-grained tannins. There’s a lovely iron-like earthiness and long, saline finish.  2020 Ch. Berliquet, Saint-Emilion  The overriding quality of 2020 Berliquet is its clarity and purity of fruit. Strawberry, redcurrant and blackberry fruit fills the palate, while a lifted florality on the nose is allied to darker, spice notes adds aromatic complexity. The tannins are fully resolved – silky, dense and well coated with the concentrated fruit and no drying elements. The wine is medium-bodied with excellent balancing acidity and while it doesn’t have the depth of neighbouring Ch. Canon, it does have a similarly elegant profile and freshness.  2020 Clos du Clocher, Pomerol  Clos du Clocher is a very expressive Pomerol in 2020, with crushed dried flowers and fresher violet aromas dominating the nose. It is already quite open on the palate with soft, juicy tannins. It is ripe, made in an opulent style, with black plum and classis fruit on the palate, as the violet tones continue to linger above. The fruit is pristine and the wine has an impressively long finish. It will no doubt be a top-value buy for the appellation and one to enjoy quite early.  2020 Ch. Lafon-Rochet, Saint-Estèphe  This is a swarthy Lafon-Rochet, full of dark bramble and blackcurrant fruit, with aromas of almost curried spice, cloves and violets. The palate has a gorgeously silken mouth-feel, seeming plush even at this youthful stage. There’s a real weight of fruit with a wave of freshness and the firm, present tannins – beautifully ripe and integrated. There’s a compact core to the wine – packed full of bramble fruit and salinity. There’s a pepper and floral freshness to balance a slightly chocolatey density to the finish. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.  2020 Ch. Duhart-Milon, Pauillac  Domaines Barons de Rothschild has made significant investment in a new winery for Ch. Duhart-Milon and, if the 2020 is anything to go by, it was worth the expense. The uplifting fragrant yet classic nose of vanilla, menthol, cassis and graphite minerality screams Pauillac. There is a lovely finesse to the tannins – detailed, very fine and matched by a lovely juiciness on the mid-palate. It is so much plusher than normal, but very Lafite-like in its restraint. There is mouth-watering acidity too. This is excellent, medium-bodied classic Bordeaux with a long finish. This really is a step up for the estate, with a new level of elegance to the palate.  2020 Ch. d’Armailhac, Pauillac  One of the most pleasant surprises in the Pauillac tasting was Ch. d’Armailhac, which seems to completely overdeliver in 2020. The colour is intense and the palate is beautifully ripe, while also remaining mouth-wateringly fresh. There is a lovely precision to the Cabernet fruit that makes it stand out. It is a very succulent and moreish wine. The tannins are very fine – firming up nicely on the finish and adding structure. You feel d’Armailhac made the most of the vintage, achieving full phenolic ripeness, while managing to retain freshness and a medium body. Impressive.  2020 Ch. Batailley, Pauillac  There’s a lovely crunch to the nose of 2020 Batailley – with aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, vibrant fresh blackcurrant, but it’s also really floral, with rose, violet, a white pepper spice, a little cocoa, and a savoury, barnyard touch behind. On the palate is soft and beautifully textured – like reams of silk, but then the wine firms up as layers of chalky tannins build up to give the wine structure. There’s a slight warmth of alcohol, but a wave of tart, almost green-apple acidity that keeps the wine feeling really fresh. Even now this feels surprisingly approachable, fresh and moreish, with a core of dark and savoury fruit. Once the scent of florals and red fruit fade, the finish is long, earthy and iron-edged.  2020 Ch. Langoa Barton, Saint-Julien  Ch. Langoa Barton is impressive in 2020. It has a lovely perfumed, floral nose with distinct violet tones. The ripe cassis fruit and milk chocolate flavours bring a lovely richness to the wine, but it is not at all overblown. The fruit is pristine, the tannins are serious yet refined and matched by a lovely natural juiciness. This is very well-balanced Saint-Julien from a vintage that seems to suit the Langoa terroir.  2020 Ch. Labegorce, Margaux  This Ch. Labegorce is particularly attractive – a bright almost scarlet purple in the glass. The nose is opulent with rich, dark red cherry and plump plum fruit complemented by a floral lift and toasty undertones. On the palate, the fruit is bright and crunchy, with good density. Vibrant and silk-textured, the tannins are fine textured. A charming, quite exotic Margaux. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aged in 40% new oak.  Explore Bordeaux or read more Editorial

THE LEFT BANK Overall looking at the regional numbers, yields were less impacted on the Left Bank – with Margaux, Saint-Julien and Pauillac producing fractionally more than in 2020, although significantly less wine (-38%) was made in Pessac-Léognan. When you dive into individual estates, the numbers are much more varied – with many down by as much as 50% in each commune. In the Médoc in 2021, Cabernet Sauvignon reigned supreme – with Merlot suffering from coulure (poor fruit-set) and being more susceptible to mildew. As a result, some of the blends are atypically Cabernet-dominant. From our tastings, quality seemed more varied on the Left Bank, especially when it came to second wines – however there are still some exceptional wines. Saint-Estèphe This northern commune escaped the impact of April’s frosts, as it always does – so mildew was the main threat to yields. In general, however, producers fared well, often producing a little more than in 2020. Properties with gravel over clay subsoils – such as Tronquoy-Lalande – thrived, as the free-draining soils that were problematic in 2020’s dry conditions helped provide water stress in 2021, something that aided ripening. At Calon-Ségur, they removed leaves from the vines on both sides, opening up the canopy in the spring to expose the fruit to what little sun there was – something that helped significantly. The key here, as throughout Bordeaux, was to be in the vineyards battling the mildew. At Tronquoy-Lalande, they found that everything ripened at once and they had all their fruit in by 6th October. Cos d’Estournel was just a day behind, and the wine is a modest 12% alcohol, interestingly with lower acidity than the 2020. They employed lower fermentation temperatures to preserve the wine’s aromatics. At Calon-Ségur it was the latest harvest since 2012, starting on 28th September with the Merlot and finishing on 13th October – their decision to wait until after the forecast rain for their Cabernet paying off. The wines here don’t show the austerity sometimes found in Saint-Estèphe, offering pretty and charming expressions of the appellation, but more tannic grip than elsewhere in 2021. Highlights: Calon-Ségur, Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, Marquis de Calon, Phélan-Ségur Pauillac Gravel and Cabernet Sauvignon: the two reasons that Pauillac seems to be more consistent than some other appellations in 2021. The free-draining soils meant vines here saw a little more water stress in the little of the season that was dry, and a natural predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon was helpful – provided you could ripen it. Blends contain high (and sometimes record-making) percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon – 98% at Pichon Comtesse, 96% at Lafite-Rothschild, 88% at Pichon Baron and so on. Yields varied significantly here, with a full crop at Batailley (which produced one of their best vintages), but at Pichon Baron yields were a lowly 22hl/ha – over a third down on the already small 2020 – and 23hl/ha at Ch. Latour (similar to 2018). The battle against mildew was tougher for estates working organically (like Lafite) or biodynamically. At Ch. Pontet-Canet, Justine Tesseron explained how this was the year they could put into action everything they’d learnt in 2018, when they lost two thirds of their crop to mildew, partly because they farm biodynamically. The 2021 vintage was the first with their own “tisanerie” – to produce their own biodynamic treatments on site – allowing them to reduce the time it took to spray the entire vineyard from 16 hours to 11, and allowing them to be much more reactive, meaning losses were just 15%. Frosts were a threat (indeed, it was the first year Pichon-Baron had ever used candles to protect their vines), but the best sites closer to the river generally escaped serious damage. Harvest dates ran from 22nd September through to the third week of October, with the Batailley one of the last teams out on 15th October. The best wines show an old school elegance and pinpoint precision that we expect of Pauillac, the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon shining through. Even wines like Ch. Latour are surprisingly approachable now, with the tannins firm but not monolithic. Highlights: Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Pichon Comtesse, Lynch Bages, Batailley, Pontet Canet Saint-Julien There are some lovely wines in Saint-Julien this year. The commune’s proximity to the river meant there was little frost damage, but mildew was a problem for some estates – at Léoville-Poyferré the yields were the lowest since 1991 at 24hl/ha, although Beychevelle had a full 50hl/ha. At Ducru-Beaucaillou – where the wine has an astounding 98% Cabernet Sauvignon – yields were only 20hl/ha, with a significant portion declassified to ensure quality met their standards. At Léoville Las Cases, the acidity was a little lower than normal and they’ve reduced the level of new oak and toasting to balance the naturally less concentrated style of wine. For the Bartons, it was their first vintage with a new vat cellar – meaning they could vinify in smaller parcels, a great advantage in a year where selection was everything. The best wines are supple with a depth of richness – perhaps thanks to the Gironde’s proximity – as well as freshness and a bite of crunchy fruit. Highlights: Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Langoa Barton, Gruaud Larose Margaux In the Médoc, Margaux seemed the most varied. Frost was a particular threat here, making for sleepless nights in April as four bouts hit the vineyards, and sites further inland saw the most damage. It was, however, the sunny weather from mid-August that turned things round. At Palmer yields are down by around 30%, but at Brane-Cantenac yields were a generous 41hl/ha; Henri Lurton emphasised that he feels it’s a vintage where the best terroirs showed their colours. He was surprised by the sheer number of tannins, which were on a par with warmer years, despite the cooler conditions. At Marquis d’Alesme, Delphine Kolasa noted how happy she was the wines weren’t being sent around the world as samples (a necessity of the global pandemic for 2019 and 2020) – feeling the more delicate style is more fragile, and even more nascent than usual given the late harvest. She thinks of it as a fresh and fruity year dominated by violet aromatics – with careful extraction essential to make sure the wine’s delicacy wasn’t over-ridden. Ch. Rauzan-Ségla produced a stunning wine – putting in the necessary work to do so, with a team of 150 to harvest and sort the fruit, which came in at just 11-12% potential alcohol. Aurélien Valence at Ch. Margaux explained it was the worst mildew pressure the team had ever seen and working organically meant they were often in the vineyard at weekends to spray, but they have made the smallest ever volume of Margaux du Ch. Margaux (the third wine) as a result. The best wines offer dainty floral charm, vibrant red fruit, chalky tannins and well-judged oak. Highlights: Margaux, Palmer, Rauzan-Ségla, Brane-Cantenac, Cantenac-Brown Graves + Pessac-Léognan Frosts threatened Graves and parts of Pessac-Léognan, although vineyards in the suburban sprawl escaped damage. Haut-Bailly brought in just 19hl/ha due to frost, and yields for Smith Haut-Lafitte were only 20hl/ha; although at Carmes Haut-Brion yields were totally normal, and Haut-Brion saw a healthy 48hl/ha. Despite the more generous yields, the Clarence Dillon team emphasised that selection was key to success; although they reported no issues with coulure in the Merlot, there’s 20% less of the Ch. Haut-Brion Grand Vin than normal as a result. At Haut-Bailly, there will be 60% less of the Grand Vin to go around. While volumes varied, quality here was impressive – the wines tending to show more richness and riper tannins than their northern neighbours, with a plush yet refined, elegant profile. Guillaume Pouthier at Carmes Haut-Brion emphasised that clay and limestone were advantageous, leading to water stress that was essential for quality – indeed he achieved 13.5% natural alcohol in the Grand Vin (a standout of the year) so had no need to chaptalise, and wasn’t alone in that regard. As elsewhere, Cabernet represents higher portions of the blend in some instances – with a record 80% at Domaine de Chevalier. (See below for discussion of the whites.) Highlights: Haut-Brion, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Haut-Bailly, Domaine de Chevalier, Smith Haut-Lafitte THE RIGHT BANK On the Left Bank Merlot suffered from coulure, but that seemed to be less of an issue on the Right – so Merlot-driven wines shouldn’t be dismissed. We found Pomerol to be impressively consistent, while Saint-Emilion – unsurprisingly given its size – was more varied. In general, the wines of the Right Bank feel almost a little more Left in style – less exotic and polished than in blockbuster vintages, with a charm, elegance and freshness that is invigorating. Yields were down almost a third across both appellations, but again it varied from estate to estate. Pomerol There was no frost in Pomerol, so it was just the mildew that posed a threat to yields. At Ch. Belle-Brise, yields were reduced by 25% – taking them down to a mere 600 cases at this tiny estate. Jacques Thienpont at Le Pin fared particularly well, the warmth of their south-facing gravel slope a boon in the vintage. They picked over a particularly long period – from 25th September to 4th October to bring in each parcel of their two hectares at the perfect moment. At La Conseillante, Dr Bertrand Nicolas emphasised how selection was key – and waiting sufficiently long to pick the Cabernet Franc. For Noëmie and Constance Durantou Reilhac of Ch. l’Eglise-Clinet, it was a particularly swift harvest – lasting just three days, and healthy yields of between 45 and 57hl/ha. The Cabernet Franc in particular was “mesmerising”, in Noëmie’s words. At several estates, the harvest was among the latest this century. Omri Ram at Ch. Lafleur noted how the tannin and sugar ripeness arrived at the same time – thanks to the water stress of August which was key for phenolics. Similarly, Guillaume Thienpont at Vieux Château Certan said it was an easy year to decide when to pick – as sugar, phenolic and flavour ripeness all came at once. At Ch. l’Evangile, it was a baptism of fire for Juliette Couderc as her first full vintage at the estate, and its first certified organic. The warmth of the appellation meant little issue with achieving ripeness, but sandier soils struggled. She noted that younger vines did surprisingly well, suffering from more hydric stress with short root systems and therefore producing more concentrated fruit. The 2021s in Pomerol aren’t powerful, plush wines with 14.5% alcohol; instead they have an alluring transparency, with floral charm and elegance (often at 13-13.5% alcohol), and higher than normal doses of Cabernet in some instances adding a flourish to the wines. Highlights: Lafleur, La Conseillante, Vieux Château Certan, L’Evangile, L’Eglise-Clinet, Clinet, L’Enclos Tourmaline, Belle-Brise, Certan de May, Feytit-Clinet Saint-Emilion Quality in Saint-Emilion varied this year – but it also produced some of the finest wines of the vintage. There’s a herbaceous freshness that isn’t green, crunchy fruit and an appealing presence to the tannic structure that isn’t obstructive – they are moderate, and all the more approachable for it. Despite the drama of the appellation around its classification system, the top wines – classified or not – are impressive. Ch. Laroque shone – continuing its ascendancy, while Clos de Sarpe achieved an impressive 14% natural alcohol in the vintage, holding out until 7th October to start picking. At Tertre Roteboeuf, François Mitjavile declared it a year that was “difficult to define”, but for him the wines show a subtlety, with the structure “tenderised” by the year’s rainy conditions. The Cheval Blanc team excelled – choosing to pick over a particularly long window, from 24th September to 14th October, while at Ausone – another success story this year – the Merlot came in on 30th September, and the Cabernet Franc between 4th and 6th October. Le Dôme felt it was key to wait out the phenolics, picking from 6th October (two weeks later than some of their neighbours) to achieve supple tannins. Frost didn’t have a significant impact here, but mildew did, especially on the crop of Merlot – at Angélus, for example, they lost 40%. Figeac reported a 10% loss, but due to a green harvest. For Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse – her first vintage at the helm of her family estate, Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse – the vintage was a question of extraction to manage the balance of the wines. As Mäylis Mercenat at Clos de Sarpe highlighted, the challenge was to extract weight not tannin – something she did with a combination of infusion and vinification intégrale. Highlights: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angélus, Figeac, Canon, Bélair-Monange, Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse, Laroque, Clos de Sarpe, Tour Saint-Christophe THE WHITES The dry whites are outstanding in 2021. Many estates reported it’s the best vintage they’ve ever made – and the wines taste like it. The cool conditions allowed the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon to develop aromatic complexity slowly, while preserving the acidity; as a result they offer incredible richness of flavour, vibrancy and no sign of greenness. Unfortunately yields were a challenge in some places, with frost taking out certain plots (such as Ch. Margaux – although fortunately not a plot that normally goes into Pavillon Blanc). At Cos d’Estournel – where the whites are thrilling – they noted they had the luxury to pick over an unusually long window, with multiple passes. The same was true at Domaine de Chevalier – with exceptional results. At Lafleur, Omri Ram highlighted that the wines were taking longer to come together than normal, but that the lack of water stress was key to their success – wines that he thinks will be the best white duo the property has ever produced. It was fascinating to see exactly the same blend across all three of the Clarence Dillon stable of whites – La Clarté de Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc and Haut-Brion proper – all 55% Semillon, 45% Sauvignon Blanc, and speaking of their site. They were hit significantly by frost – with 20% less Haut-Brion Blanc and 35% less Clarté. For the team here, the combination of acidity and ripeness is what sets the wines apart, even better than either 2014 or 2017. Botrytised sweet wines were made in tiny volumes, hit significantly by frost. The tiny volumes of fruit that survived benefitted from the long, cool growing season, however, and from the late development of botrytis in October. The tiny amount we tasted was exceptional, however very little will make it to market – with yields as low as 1 or 2hl/ha reported by some estates. At Ch. Suduiraut, for example, they made just 500 cases in total. Highlights: Haut-Brion Blanc, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. I vini venduti en primeur saranno rilasciati dal produttore dopo limbottigliamento, tipicamente 18 mesi dopo la fine della cosiddetta campagna. Il tuo vino sarà poi conservato da FINE+RARE in un deposito doganale fino a quando deciderai di richiederne la consegna.

Reperiremo questo articolo attraverso la nostra rete di fornitori e ne organizzeremo la spedizione a FINE+RARE.
 I tempi di consegna dipendono da molte variabili, ma una stima media è di 6-12 settimane.
 Una volta confermato lordine, ti terremo aggiornato sulla data di arrivo prevista.
