Elio Altare's 1996 Barolo is fabulous. The density, power and texture are clearly those of a wine from the modern school, and yet the flavor profile is surprisingly classic, with plenty of tar, licorice, tobacco and rose petal nuances. Vivid and deeply expressive the 1996 is in a great place to deliver fine drinking for another 5-10 years. The 50% new oak is barely perceptible. This is a superb showing for a straight Barolo.

The 1996 Barolo exhibits a saturated, not very evolved dark ruby color. It reveals notes of sur-maturite in its ripe, fruity style. The 1996 is broodingly backward, spicy, rich, and highly extracted. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2010. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Deep red-ruby color. Candied raspberry and crystallized dark berries on the nose. Thick, concentrated and minerally; strong in extract and quite backward, especially for a basic bottling.
