Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2016-2035, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2016

Another very pleasant surprise, the 1995 Barolo is absolutely singing. Dark tonalities of fruit and firm yet well-integrated tannins are some of the signatures. The 1995s have always been a bit burly, but the best wines from this vintage are now entering the sweet spot. That certainly applies to the 1995, which may be the best and most complete vintage of the 1990s to drink today. The 1995 is also the first vintage to be bottled with just two years in oak, as opposed to the three years that was previously the norm.

The 1995 Barolo displays a moderate cranberry color with a pink edge leading to amber. It is light to medium-bodied, with intriguing spice box aromas intermixed with strawberry and cherry fruit. Moderate tannin in the finish suggests this wine will have limited longevity of 7-10 years. Importers: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200 and Riservati, Seattle, WA; tel. (206) 623-5758

Medium red. Redcurrant, strawberry and tar on the nose. Shows good density and sweetness but is currently shocked by the recent bottling. Today, I don't find quite the depth and complexity of flavor this wine showed from barrel two years ago, but this is a difficult moment for tasting this wine. Sound acidity kicks in on the firm finish. Will need at least four or five years of additional bottle aging.
