The 2005 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru had a breath-taking bouquet that redefines intensity. There is a very subtle tropical note here, delicately interwoven between those liquid mineral scents, all brilliantly defined. The palate is medium-bodied and saline on the entry, hints of oyster shell and fruits de mer tincturing the citric notes, then a crescendo of flavors towards a vivid, slightly viscous finish that is kept in line by that razor-sharp acidity. Wow. This 2005 is one of the greatest white Burgundy wines that I have ever encountered and ranks alongside Coche-Dury's Corton-Charlemagne as the wine of the vintage. 600 bottles produced. Tasted at the d'Auvenay dinner in Hong Kong.

Good pale yellow. Aromas of crushed stone, nuts and resin. Very rich but dry and backward, with a hint of pineapple and powerful soil-driven minerality. Not at all a fruity style; in fact, I found the seemingly oxidative nutty quality running through the wine to be a bit worrying. Judgment withheld.
