Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is quite a lot of reduction on the nose of the Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or, but underneath is some quite decent redcurrant and fresh strawberry fruit that gradually unfurls in the glass. There is still some oak here to be resolved, but there is sufficient substance here to suggest that patience is all that is needed. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy on the opening. This is soft and caressing in the mouth with quite a sensual and well-balanced finish that neatly carries the oak. This is well crafted but will improve with another 18-24 months in bottle.

Good red-ruby. Black raspberry, smoke and a whiff of exotic fruits on the nose. Silky and fine-grained, with a lush texture given clarity and lift by nicely integrated acidity. A rather intellectual but very easy-to-drink wine with intriguing soil tones and a subtle, mounting finish featuring suave tannins. Really spreads out to coat the palate on the end. This should make for superb drinking within three or four years but will be approachable from the outset.
A strikingly elegant nose features notes of ripe, pure and airy red currant, briar, cassis and spice nuances. There is an equally pure and refined character to the lacy medium weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the beautifully focused, balanced and impressively lengthy finish. As it typically is, this is a wine of finesse and grace. A classic Volnay. Tasted: Apr 15, 2013. Drink: 2019+
