The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is better than I expected. It shows the medium-bodied structure of the year, with a compelling inner perfume that adds an exotic, sensual flair. Red cherry, kirsch, white flower and mint build effortlessly, all framed by ripe tannins that add to an impression of finesse.

Soldera's 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva appears to be entering an early plateau of maturity. The tannins have started to resolve, while the aromatics show lovely signs of development. All things considered, the 1998 is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade, as it is not likely to improve materially from here.
The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is just as gorgeous today as it has always been, even if it lacks some of the visceral thrill of the very best wines made at Soldera’s Case Basse property. A rich, intense wine, the 1998 Riserva simply has it all. Best of all, the 1998 is in a beautiful place right now where it has so much to offer.
Light ruby. Light nose and lots of development – fully mature spread of aromas. Marked acidity, recalls the 2000. Great life. Lighter than most at the moment. Very, very long. Very good with risotto. (JR)
