Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2022-2034, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Oct 2022

The power and depth that is such a signature of Clerc Milon is still evident at 37 years old, with a core of intense black fruits that has softened but still holds on. A little austere in its tannic frame, but unquestioning in its Pauillac character, with ecualpytus, mint, soy, cassis. 19% new oak. Patrick Leon had arrived as director the year before, in 1985. Harvest October 2 to 15.

The 1986 Clerc Milon, which was still around 22 hectares at this time, is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. I last tasted this in April 2013 when it showed well. Three years later, it has a very meaty, fully mature bouquet with attractive secondary aromas of singed leather and oxtail scents developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, a little rustic on the entry, grainy in texture, masculine with graphite, leather and dried blood. Quite a spicy Pauillac, ferrous even and showing a little dryness towards the finish, this is a commendable Clerc-Milon that is beginning to show more of its bucolic charm, but I would still take pleasure in seeing this on the dinner table. Tasted September 2016.

This particular wine is one of Mouton winemaker Philippe Dhalluin's favourites, exhibiting nicely the potential of this estate. It was served blind – another leftover from the Chinese guests as lunch who requested younger wines than this and the Mouton 1961 that had been prepared for the. I thought it was a 1990; it was that luscious and sweet. Very round and full – packed full of charm. (JR)

Seductively rich and supple with layers of elegant plum, cherry and currant flavors that are beautifully defined before the tannins kick in on the finish. The notes linger on and on. Best from 1998 through 2009.-James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1989
