Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2015-2018, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Feb 2015

The 2004 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Caillerets is a rather vexing wine. Earthy and musty on the nose, over time there is a slight vegetal note in the background coming to the fore. The palate is medium-bodied with that mustiness coming through again and denuding this wine of its purity and terroir expression. Not a terrible wine, but I feel that it is compromised.

Lovely clarity. This was another rather rich wine with a low-key whisper of smoke on the finish but overall it is sweeter and less edgy than my dream intellectual Cailleret that tastes more mineral than this and in some ways tastes like a baby Chevalier-Montrachet. It's certainly ready to drink. (JR)

Pale, bright yellow. Ripe aromas of peach nectar, citrus peel, flowers and spices. Dense, ripe and fine-grained; a step up in intensity and richness from the Morgeot. Vibrant yet supple flavors of crushed stone and spice, complicated by licorice and mint. Finishes quite lively, with impressive density, sweetness and length.

2004 is a terrific vintage chez Gagnard. (from 35 year old vines) A completely different aromatic expression that is supremely elegant with its ultra pure white flower and liquid limestone nose that complements perfectly the detailed and pungently mineral middle weight flavors culminating in a subtle, fine and sophisticated finish of striking length. This won't be for everyone as its vibrant to the point of almost painful intensity and will require a few years to completely round out. 2010+
