The 2011 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru needs a tad more mineralité and terroir expression on the nose. It gradually responds to aeration to reveal autumn leaves and woodland scents, a touch of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, just a little greenness surfacing towards the finish. Not bad, although I think Thomas Bouley has overseen better vintages recently. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

Doesn't reveal much on the nose at first but becomes more savoury and darker fruited as it opens up. Some dark chocolate on the palate, giving that dry and fine texture. Attractive restraint, dryish finish. (JH)
An intensely floral nose of dark berries, wet stone, earthy and fennel nuances serves as an elegant introduction to the mouth coating, broad-shouldered and beautifully tension-filled medium weight plus flavors that brim with a fine minerality. The focused finish really fans out as it lingers in the mouth and the intensity is borderline painful. A wine for the patient but the potential is seriously impressive. Tasted: Apr 15, 2013.
