Minerals, nuts and a hint of butter on the leesy nose. Fat, sweet and fruity, but with good mineral underpinning. A ripe, layered wine that's a bit less complex and light on its feet than the last few samples.

Light to medium-bodied, fleshy, and plush, the 2002 Puligny-Montrachet Les Perrieres offers white flower and mineral aromas. This spicy, detailed, elegant wine is packed with loads of stones, pears, and toast whose effects linger in its lengthy, detailed finish. Projected maturity: now-2011. “I have only good things to say about 2002. It is the fourth in a series of good vintages, starting with the 1999s. There was no rot, great maturity, and excellent balance to add backbone,” said Gerard Boudot, Sauzet’s winemaker. He went on to add, “2002 is a very good vintage. Some people compare it to 1996, but those were much more austere wines. Some people speak of 1992, but it is livelier. Maybe it reminds me of 1985.” Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. Full, rich, round, and relatively opulent, yet with lots of acidity. A citrus streak. Very long. Dense, nutty, and lemony. Not an ounce of flab. Quite tense, but convincing that it will develop. (JR)
