A gorgeous wine, the 2009 Barolo Villero is drinking beautifully right now. This is in part due to the softer, more approachable style of the 2009 vintage. Barolo Villero shows a great level of aromatic intensity and pureness that immediately pops from the glass. Silky but firm tannins are enhanced by notes of dried fruit, cassis, pressed flower and licorice. The mouthfeel is incredibly silky and firm.

Mascarello's Barolo Villero is always the lightest of the three single-vineyard Barolos, but it is seriously lacking in depth in 2009.
(bottled in July of 2013): Slightly dull palish red. Musky strawberry and raspberry along with exotic flowers on the somewhat diffuse nose. Then candied but also nicely perfumed on the palate, with strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors lifted by a minty nuance and complicated by a whiff of tobacco. Smooth and approachable wine with reasonably ripe, slightly edgy tannins. But lacks a bit of color and lift in this very warm year, as do many other Barolos from sandier soils.
Bought in 1985, planted in 1988, first released in 1992, Villero differs from Monprivato in that it is lower down and has 10% sand in its soil. Rich and dense and with lots of autumn mulch. Powerful. Very rich. But with some life and structure. (JR)
