Punteggio 91+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2013

Good medium red. Smoky redcurrant, leather, chocolate and spices on the nose. Round, rich and deep but quite backward today, offering a chewy texture but holding back its fruit. Best now on the sweet, broad back end, which features serious but nicely ripe tannins, a steadily building spice character and very good lift.

(racked in October and just blended in stainless steel tank): Good deep red with ruby tones. Cool aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black tea and licorice. Suprisingly ripe and sweet in the mouth, but with excellent sappy verve to the deep black cherry and spice flavors. A lovely vibrant midweight with excellent persistence. Philippe Prost noted that this vineyard is still recovering from hailstorms in 2004 and 2001, and that the 2009 version marked its return to health.

Can get overripe easily. One of their oldest plots – owned since 1775. Very fruity and rich immediately. Very big on the palate too. Rich and very ripe with some obvious sweetness. Very rich wine indeed. Though it needs time for the tannin to diffuse. Not the freshest but impressive. Perhaps too ripe for real classicists. (JR)
