Petit Mouton can often have a rather sweaty, Petit Verdot quality to it but this year it looks much more like a Mouton family member. Bright and floral blackcurrant nose with a soft supple palate awash with bright acids. Naturally a bit of Petit Verdit sweat manages to creep in at the end but not bad.

The 2011 Le Petit Mouton has quite a rich bouquet with touches of mint and camphor, maybe missing a little cohesion and freshness compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth opening, very plush and seductive although it disguises the fact that there is not much depth here. Easygoing for a Pauillac, drink this now and over the next four to five years. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
Tasted blind. Garnet with a ruby rim. Some suggestion of serious concentration. Very supple and well balanced with none of the faults of 2011 except, perhaps, for a little more acidity than in many 21st-century vintages – which is no bad thing. Sleek and a pleasure-giver. (JR)
Some coffee but also a nice stony savoury quality on the nose, and the same on the palate. Papery tannins, a bit flat in the middle and the acidity somewhat intrusive on the finish. (JH)
